The Bunny Chat Thread - For Bunny Owners

This is how I'll be redoing the rabbit setup. They used to be in cages on either side in shelves but I'm going to take all that out and replace it with a big area for the bunnies with toys, tunnels, a teepee, a large litter box, lots of hay, boxes, and hidey houses. I'll use a wite gate to keep them in and people out. On the other side I'll have two tall rat cages and two long mice cages in the middle.
That looks like such a nice setup! I have watched your posts about this, and I saw you mentioned the name of the place. Funny, I have been there several times before. :) From what I can recall, they seemed to take care of the animals pretty well. That's so nice you can help them out giving the rabbits a bigger place to stay, though. I might've missed your post...did you contact them about it? Just curious. Keep us updated!

I haven't contacted them yet but I'm going there to see what their setup currently looks like to I can estimate how much it will cost based off what it looks like. Then, I'll try to raise some money and contact them.

I received some good advice over on Backyard Herds on the care of a large litter of kits! It was suggested that I split the litter up and rotate the kits so the mom could feed them all! I'm hoping that she's feeding them twice a day as that will be better, but I don't know if she is. I'm still away from home, so my husband is taking care of them. I really hope all 13 survive! 💞

that's why I like to breed 2 females at the same time, the off chance that one has a huge litter of kits and the other has a small one, you can foster them to have 2 even litters. But first time I did that I ended up with 2 giant litters of New Zealand whites. I started breeding a Florida White (small litters) with my New Zealand white (large Litters) so I could even out the litters.

We actually tried to breed both of our does for that very reason, but the 2nd doe was not receptive, even with help. I tried again to breed her the next week, she still wasn't receptive, so I left her with the buck for a while & I've been hoping she would kindle, but so far no kits & it's almost past time.

I might have a breeding mess now. I went out to check on the rabbits and in one of the pens the female had gotten inside of the male cage. Not sure if any action happened. All these rabbits were born in June so they are too young to breed but I have heard stories of pregnancies happening in meat rabbit grow out cages a a much younger age.

I do not always lock the cage because its a top loader and the male rabbits do not even explore for an escape. However the female looked like she climbed it and found how to slip under the door. I may have rabbits in a few weeks. I need to go research the gestation period time and mark my calendar an check on her through out that period.
