The Bunny Chat Thread - For Bunny Owners

Oh no! Trying to catch bunnies is not fun
One of the reasons why I made ground level pens is that it can be hard to catch a rabbit but they will return home if they can access home. If one of my rabbits escapes and I can not catch it then I just leave the door open until it comes home. Although the most resent escapee was the rabbit that will climb into my lap to be petted. She came right up to me (and I thought she was a wild rabbit at first). When I bent over to pick her up she would hop just out of my reach and stop. This went on for a while but eventually she let me pick her up. If I was 20 years younger and 20 pounds lighter I could probably catch her as she hops out of my reach.

Just a couple of pictures, males in penthouse cages, females on the ground,

Huge litters are a little nerve wracking! We have our chickens and rabbits on a shared gravity fed water system, so thankfully I don't have to worry about that to much until the weather gets to cold for it and we have to switch! Poo balls are definitely great for the garden.

I don't know anything about hemp for rabbits....I do know that hemp is great in the coop, especially if you are doing the deep litter method! I'm growing Comfrey for my rabbits and chickens...they love it!
Doesn’t comfrey affect the liver?

I snagged this picture off of Craigslist, its a Mini Rex... with the thin fur on the hocks on the absolute worst flooring for a Rex Rabbit. Luckily Mini Rex weigh less than Standard Rex but still... that's the thin gage of wire, basic hardware cloth and not the thicker gage wire that should be used for rabbit cages. They are creating sore hocks by doing this. This isn't even good for normal rabbit and even worse for Rex... just needed to vent. Found 2 different people on Craigslist selling Rex Rabbits with the wrong flooring. I am not even that big on being preachy about these things. People often have small cages or other set ups that are not ideal and I will say live and let live... But this is really bad and the wrong breed to be careless with this type of wire flooring.. This is like putting people barefoot in a room full of broken glass.

If using the right type of wire floor it can actually be a cleaner more sanitary environment for some rabbits. So I can appreciate someone getting the right type of wire floor. Rex Rabbits do not do well on them, and rabbits not getting enough protein can have issues with sore hocks too. My male rabbits have a 6 inch strip of wire floor with the concrete pavers pitched towards it so urine runs off to the correct location. They usually do their business right on the 6 inch strip. It also gets fill with hay everyday and I clean it out for the compost pile. I have seen hutches with wood floor for most of the hutch and a wire floor area for food, water and bathroom. I like that set up the best because they spend most of their time on a solid floor but do the messy parts of life on the wire floor.

The Former Hurricane Sally was headed my way and heavy rain bands were supposed to hit here tonight and there was going to be 2 straight hours of heavy rains so I downed a bunch of energy drinks (not recommended because they are not healthy) to make sure I was awake to handle any problems with the rabbit pens being flooded and after I downed 3 of them the forecast changed from heavy rain to light rain, now its just cloudy. Too late though because I can't sleep. But we will have rain all day today that I need to be awake but chances are I am going to pass out and sleep heavy when the energy drinks wear off. Kinda bored so I posted here. At sunset I was frantically running around putting up extra splash guards because we were going to get a slight 12 MPH breeze with the rain. Its not much but its enough to cause places to get damp that I prefer to stay dry. Its cooled off so I do not need to worry about rabbits over heating by covering them up a bit. All that for nothing! oh well, I am just glad that I might not get flooded at 4 am... Not out of the woods though, rain all day long might cause a few problems. Stupid Hurricanes... I guess I should be glad that I live so far inland that Hurricanes do not bring storm surges and high winds... but they do bring too much rain some years.

So, I think the rabjots ate being kept outside now. And there's seven of them.
That complicates things.
I'd much rather have them inside.
We couldn't go this week because of the rain and the rest of the week was busy but we'll go next week.

At least they aren't in little cages.
Sorry for poofing from the thread, but sorry to hear you didn't get to go. That actually looks like they've got some space, which is good! Can you tell from any pictures if it's a proper size? It may be their pen is good enough, but maybe you can still implement some of your toys and hide outs from you plan. I don't know. If they are given cover from the weather (which I assume so) and are made sure to keep cool because of the heat I don't see why being outside should be a problem. They're on the ground too so no possibilities of improper wire flooring.

I hope you can still do something for them, seeing you're running into some unexpected situations. :)
