The Bunny Chat Thread - For Bunny Owners

@Minky
Also, rabbits teeth are constantly growing. They are also very smart. If they dont have toys to keep them mentally stimulated and to help their teeth then they'll chew.
You can make DIY toys out of toilet paper rolls and cardboard. Rabbits also live pinecones.
Willow balls and apple wood sticks are great too.
And rabbits love cat tunnels.

You've already gotten lots of great advice about litter training but I just wanted to mention that the bigger the litter box the better.
Those little Conner litter trays aren't big enough. It will work while he's a baby, but even dwarf rabbits are too big for those litter pans.
He should be able to turn all the way around eailsy in it.
You could get an under the bed storage tub at the dollar store for a litter box. Those work great for rabbits.
Be sure you have lots of hay in your litter box too. Rabbits eat while they poo, so providing lots of hay will make them want to use it more.

While you are still litter training him dont free roam in to big of an area. Just one room that you can monitor him in.
I highly recommend getting him a wire dog playpen instead of a cage. You can fit all his needs in there and he can still have room to play. A cage doesn't provide any of that.

When rabbits are only kept in cages they become bored and often chew it. And hence they are let put they'll chew even more things. They also can't exercise in there, which means they'll have spent up energy. This makes them much less cuddly.
Of course babies will have more energy than an adult so they won't be very cuddly anyways.

Once he's about 3-6 months old, hormones will kick in. This is the teenage phase.
They start chewing thing more, they're not at all cuddly, and their personality changes.
Getting him neutered will fix this.
You'll probably notice he's a lot calmer, not destructive, much much better with litter training, smells better, and more cuddly.

Oh, I forgot to mention, on BYC you have to pay a fee for info.
We need pictures!!!!

Edit: sorry for all the typos, I'm typing this on my phone while running around packing 🤣

To protect baseboards you can either use NIC grids or wire shelving. The wire shelving works best for long areas, and NIC grids work best for shorter areas.
Cord protectors are a must have. A lot of wite have soy in them which a lot of animals can smell and will want to chew.
You can also keep the wire behind the NIC grids or wire shelves in addition to the cord protectors.

If you find him chewing on wall corners you can get these clear corner protectors. You can paint them to match your walls too

Soy in wires? Huh. Learn something new everyday 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for the advice. He poops everywhere in his cage!! and there are little pee stains everywhere too. Cleaning it all with vinegar. He has peed twice while out and about, and some nuggets, but not much chewing at all. Phew! He likes the mudroom- smelling boots and the boot tray etc..
No chance for corner protectors, covering baseboards etc. Not happening. He is 8 weeks. He is a double maned dwarf Lionhead. How old when we should get him fixed? My 13 year old outdoor hunter cat is terrified of him. Poor Fluffer-Nugget wants a friend.

Hey y’all, I don’t remember if I’ve ever posted pictures of my rabbit’s space. If i did the math right, she has about 22-ish sq ft (I think that math includes the space I just added under my bed). But anyway, she has tunnels, toys, and a litter box and water bowl in the cage (she’s only locked in the cage at night)

You can neuter him at 6 months old. Some people do ot as soon as 4 months, but with such a small bunny I would wait longer.
Once you get him fixed you can get him a friend too! Lots of rescue with rabbits that are already fixed, and they can bind them for you.

Is he pooping in mostly one corner? If so, move the litter box there.
You don't want to live it much or it will confuse him. That's why I'd recommend getting him a playpen soon so you can set it up and keep it there.

He has a corner litter box that clips onto the cage. cage is 5 feet by about 22 inches, with a platform, and underneath space. he hasn't touched his hay yet (1 week) not even a bite. its in the hay manger by the litter box. He loves the branches and dried weeds and leaves. he prefers to drink out of his bowl then the water bottle. the minute we open his door he comes out. He will run all the way back in to drink and come out again immediately. So I know he will be able to do it with pee and poop if he figures it out. but 80% of poop and pee is in the litter pan, but 20% is all over his cage. We move it into the litter as soon as we see it... but I am then always touching poop!!

this is an awesome space - lucky bunny. I will pick up some baby chew toys next time I drive by Value Village! And a tunnel!
