....marans...

Anyway...

Since they're both going to be straight run (the co-op is actually 'bating the black copper marans themselves), I will maybe get a handful of one of the other... Which would most likely lay the darkest eggs. (also which would be compatable with EEs, buff orpingtons and giant blue cochins?)

Wow- that's great! I wish mine would do something like that.

I think the BCMs lay darker eggs (normally) and they would also be closer in temperment to the cochins and orps. Penedesencas are supposed to be pretty flighty.

The real answer relies in where the Co-Op is getting their chicks from.

Lately from what I've seen, the only hatchery who offers BCM's and Pennies gets both theirs from Gabbard Farms, who has Black Coppers that lay just as dark as a good Welsummer. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hopefully they are getting the BCM's from a local breeder. So rare is it that feedstores and co-ops do that. I tried contacting my local one, and she seemed very excited about it, but once chick ordering season came in - She never responded back.

Yep. I hear people saying McMurray has Black Coppers, but, I think that's just a rumor or misinformation.

I would imagine that they are getting the BCM's from a local breeder.... They're hatching the eggs themselves, they have quite a few pens with adult birds and pullets in them too, so they might be hatching eggs layed by their own birds.

Welp Hatchery has BCMs and Penes, I don't know what their quality is though. I don't know for sure, but I am guessing this is where this Co-Op is getting their birds... as they are getting many breeds I found on their online catalogue (the giant blue cochins, and more).
