I got my EE roo at 17 weeks old last September. He was rough with the hens and just plan mean with everyone else. At first I tossed him in the brooder that was in the run for a couple days so he could see everyone and they could see him, but he couldn't get to to them. That worked a bit and knocked him down a couple pegs with all the other birds. Then he tried to flog me. After that I chased him down and picked him up every day. I would pin him down for a few seconds, then pick him up and carry him around. Now he is a complete gentlemen with everyone in the run. He is great with his hens and is really good around people. That's what worked for me. Now he comes over to me to be picked up. He's a good roo now.

I remember when I had my 2 white polish roosters. I never knew what it was like to be hit by a chicken! It felt like someone threw a brick at my leg. Than when my Winsummer rooster tried doing it I sprayed him down with the hose and started holding him down alot more. He is much more friendly now and doesn't give me any crap

Please check out my thread I'm having a similar problem with a one year old rooster.

So if you hold them everyday for an hour they submit? I have tried to pick up Charlie but in the process I almost lost a finger! My dad told me to get a blanket over him THEN hold him but oh boy, Charlie sure can run.

Thank you

, i will try the picking them up.

@ginbart, it wasn't planed, they were going to be put down, we didn't even had a space for them so we just put them in the kennel and brought the dogs in, dogs were happy, the chickens don't thing they cared to much, except now they have plenty more food

@Moochie, lol, actually i can see that happening, one of them is this big black thing, very pretty, but quiet scary as chickens go....

The advice you have been given is good. Holding them to show who wears the "spurs" in the family is the best way to do it. Do this EVERY time he challenges you. I used to give a tug on a tail feather after a sneak attack. I think my BO would have stopped sooner if I hadn't been afraid of him. A few bites and I realized he wasn't going to cause more than a welt and a bruise. My boys have calmed down alot but still challenge me by doing their little dance and untying my shoes. I guess I can live with that.

Rooster behavior- protective, charges, dances, nips, calms down by 1 yr old

Aggressive Rooster behavior- stalks, sneaks, tries to spur you in the eye, calms down after you roast him

Roos can be jealous. I've had pet roos for years and get dirty looks from SPIKE, my Bantam Cochin roo when I pick up and hug SPUD, my Silkie roo. Yes, they can be a pain at times, but roos are beautiful and if loved and treated right, they are great pets.
