The wire is 14 gauge 1"x2"

I may have to add wire but I would not remove what is already there. I can put 1/2" mesh on the inside if needed. Had a visit from a coon last night at10:30 scoping out my cat food while my wife was sitting on the deck. He climbed a tree near the driveway after she woke me up and I responded with the scoped .22. I waited in the rocker until about 11:00 pm. He came down on the backside of the tree and my neighbors Border Collie had a short go at it. It must have climbed another tree because I did not see it again. That coon's days/nights are numbered. Dang, I don't even have any Ladies in the coop yet.

Yes, that would be recommended, especially since you've already had a coon sighting. The welded wire is good for added strength, so simply attach the hardware cloth over or under it to prevent coons from reaching through, and smaller pests like rodents from climbing in.

This is amazing! A break from digging is well deserved. Your flock is going to be so happy with everything you add!
But be careful... chicken math may take affect and you may be adding to the yard with more coops to make a Chicken Village.
