The decomposition steps of castrating a cockerel ((GRAPHIC PICS!!!))

chinese capons, I can't figure out how to order the capon tool set, how much it is in U.S. dollars and if I can pay w/ paypal?

Intending to caponize 4 week old RIR chicks. I am certain that 6 of 10 are roos. This was determined by the head feathers when we received delivery of the new chicks. Not so easy to distinguish today. If I start the procedure on a chick that turns out to be a hen, and not disturb anything further, would she still be able to lay eggs down the road? Thanks

I don't get that at all. If the animal is being eaten then it is removed from the gene pool and any influence over the population. What evolutionary advantage is
gained by not feeling pain during death that would enable that animal's offspring to have a better chance of survival over an animal that did feel pain while it
is being consumed?

You know how when you hang a chicken upside down, it goes really still? It's called hypertonic immobility. Most small prey animals have this ability. When they go still like that, they can fool a predator into missing their hiding location or growing bored and leaving them alive and alone. It's an effective survival mechanism.

When they go into hypertonic immobility, scientists have discovered that the animal experiences a flood of serotonin to the brain. One of the benefits of serotonin is that it can normally reduce the intensity of pain signals to the brain and relaxes the body.

So, this trait would end up being passed on through countless generations of animals who survived encounters with predators.

I would love how to do this! I have a grow out pen full of RIR roosters bound for freezer camp. It would be awesome if they were capons!

Anyone know of a reliable place to learn how to do this?

No you pull the skin just prior to cutting so the incision through the skin and the flesh don't line up after you release it. That means the deeper incision through the flesh is already covered w/ skin (better then any other wound cover) and the outer incision is just through the skin, quick and easy repair for the chicken.

Anyone w/ experience growing out capons, do they have a pecking order and hazing to new additions like non castrated chickens? (male and female)

Very awesome to see such detailed pics! Should be said that this procedure *is* illegal in some countries as it is considered cruel (like raising overbred chickens to 6 weeks old before slaughter is not). It would be important to check and make sure that you won't be in trouble if it gets out that you do this.

I look at it like SSS (shoot, shovel, and shut up). If no one knows, then there's no problem. I feel that this is the greatest thread on caponizing on the whole site. This chinese fellow is fantastic.
