The DOUBLE Litter - post 202 kids and puppy pix!

I feel that the 49th day is not too young for experienced homes. This is the beginning of the 7th week.

Pfaffenberger and others who have done studies agree that once day 49 is reached, puppies are ready to go their new homes as far as critical periods and socialization is concerned.

I also do not feel that these things should be legislated. Circumstances can vary.

And now that I look at an actual calendar, my puppies will be ready to go home the weekend of Dec. 5th. Most of them will probably leave on that Saturday which is one day before they turn 8 weeks old.

This will give them almost 3 weeks to settle in before the holidays.

I just wish people would get it through their thick skulls that FIVE weeks is too young. They learn bite inhibition in that time frame, how to interact with others etc.

Yet people out there still sell them that young, and people buy them.

Too bad... -sigh-

Yea I agree on experienced homes but unfortunately that is too hard to regulate and some backyard breeders just churn them out not caring which is why the legislation came about in the first place.

That's great about the puppies being ready 3 weeks before.. lots of time before Christmas to get them settled in.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can legislate stupidity or ethics.

Anyone walking who can click a mouse can find information on critical periods in puppies, and why puppies should not be separated from their littermates until they are at least 7 weeks old.

The ones who do not care will do it anyway. The ones who DO care won't do it whether it is a law or not.

She is really starting to get there. Hope all goes well with mom and pups.

Also wanted to add where I live it is illegal to sell companion animals before they are 8 weeks old which I think is great! I just had a couple come see my current litter who purchased a puppy out of state while driving through. She was only 5 weeks old and she died on them within two days. In my breed people try to sell puppies MUCH too young because when it comes to chihuahuas the smaller the better. They were shocked to find the female of mine they were interested in was already 8 weeks old and I told them they were able to go home for 24 hours think it over and come back and get her. She is tiny AND extremely healthy. She is just a pet quality dog and I'm so happy that she is living down the street now with two other chi brothers and sisters to live with. In my opinion puppies should not be sold any time before the 7th week. And it differs so much for each situation and each breed.

It's really sick. People don't realize they can get pet quality pups from a show breeder who's breeding stock are health tested and who's puppies have health guarantees for the same price as you can get a pup from a poor byb. Plus you get lifetime support and in most cases a much better representative of the breed standard. People just won't take the time to find a puppy. They have to have one right now and don't care what their money actually buys them. It's sad.
