The Duck Thread

I like to scramble eggs with mung bean sprouts.

They also work very well making custard -edited to include a link to a recipe - http://ltdfarm.com/?p=3008

with a little sweetener if desired. Making custard can be a little tricky, depending on the recipe. The one above is the simplest I have ever seen. Even if you use the process of adding egg to heated milk (that's the tricky part) it is worth it! Makes a terrific quick breakfast (making the custard takes a while - but you can make a batch of six servings, and have breakfast or nice dessert for the rest of the week).

Great news! After a long 4 months, we got 3 eggs from our 3 female ducks. I was so excited. But this past week only 2 eggs all week. Every day our weather is changing-cloudy or overcast one day, sunny and comfy in the mid 60's the next. Could the weather be a factor?

Yes! The weather is a big factor! Ducks and chickens need sun to make eggs! If they don't get enuf of it, they just don't lay! My smaller chickens havent laid much at all until we had a full week of rain then the sun popped out and it warmed up and they were all out sun bathing...got eggs that day and the few sunny days that followed! U can use artificial light, i just don't want to! Ive read that it can shorten their life span but im not sure if thats true or not!

@Julie Bird I got something special, just for you... :D

S7n was certainly not the factor here as we are in very hot South Central California. The 2 older girls quit laying after they both laid and sat on 24 eggs. Only one assumed the mother role,bc there were only 4 hatches and one dead. They didn't lay all summer long . Out of those 3 we have one female who started laying before the other 2 older gals did. Now one of them has stopped laying again, but I've no clue which one it is.

Congrats on your first of many eggs. 7 months and still waiting on my  Muscovy girls to lay. Looking like not till spring now.
Thank you. I'm waiting on my geese girls to start laying too. I read somewhere it takes geese a year before they start and I think mine are pretty close to a year old now. Good luck with your Muscovy girls.

Awesome and cool. Thank you. I am excited. Her babies will be stunners since she's such a strong little birb. Hey, I've seen her fly. It's still such an amazing thing seeing the little tiny baby with all his duck parts in the shell. He's alive and thriving.
