The Duck Thread

I know this is the duck forum, but I am fond of this forum and the people on it lol. The chicken one is foreign to me. And even tho they're not as cute as ducklings, my husband's surprise chicks are still cute

They are adorable. I'd tape the wing in proper place it may heal fine. Use vet wrap and check it every other day to make sure it isn't too tight since they grow fast.

@PotatoWaffles - they really are very cute & I have heard that wing issues can be fixed by taping as Miss Lydia mentioned above. Do you already have a coop or something for them or did hubby create more work for himself?

He created a lot more work for himself lol. I guess the plan is to try and introduce them to the ducks (very slowly) and go from there. He is going to cull any males, so hopefully there will be maybe 3-4 girls left. If all goes well, he plans to modify the duck shed to have laying boxes off the ground and some perches. We might even be getting a whole separate shed. It all depends how how well the birds interact together.

We haven't taped the wing yet. It's just so tiny I can't imagine how we could tape it. It also has a sore on the wing now (I think it's getting picked on). We put some ointment on it yesterday. If I have time today I'll try to get a picture of it, it's not pretty. But she's eating and drinking fine so at least there's that.

The wing was slightly droopy on Thursday when he brought them home, but it wasn't very noticeable. On Saturday I noticed she was holding it out from her body and that the wig drooped straight down, and yesterday there was a sore and some sort of hard brown scab. It's very strange. Her whole wing is just a mess. And it looks worse after putting the ointment on it because it's all wet now. It just doesn't seem like there's much we can do :(

It is sweet that hubby surprised you...especially knowing he was creating work for himself.

I wonder how old they'll be before you can tell girls from boys. I know very little about chickens. If you have drakes, though, the one problem I know of would be if they try to mate with the female chickens.

Adorable! I find my chickens to be easier than the ducks. Good thing I got my ducks first, lol! Chickens are really, really bad at pecking sores so get the wing wrapped up quickly and that should help with the pecking too. Chickens will happily peck eachother to death if they see something of interest. I never want to fall dead in my coop. Very cute!

I will have to do some searching to see how to wrap such a tiny wing. I have some of that stretchy wrap (vet wrap I think) from when my dog cut his paw. But I don't know how to tape it up. The wing is so stiff.

Oh he surprised me alright. I don't like chickens much and I hate roosters lol. But he has wanted some for a while and just up and bought them from the store. I guess with marriage comes compromise lol.

I will try tonight to tape it. I just don't know how lol.
Look at the good wing where the chick hold it by it's side then place the broken one in same position wrap the wing close to the body using the vet wrap that will hold the wing in proper position and give it time to heal.

I am trying to get things ready for my new ducklings next week. I have the water pan fixed but what about the food. How do I keep the ducklings from getting inside the feeder and pooping in their feed. Any of the commercial feeders look like the holes are too small for the duckling's beak. I noticed that someone took an egg crate and cut the back out and placed feed in there. A good idea but they still can get into their feed and poop in it. Any suggestions??
