The Duck Thread

Just a thought, if you could possibly bring him in also, crated next to her, but unable to touch her, maybe they could reunite more easily?

How old are they? Do they mate? Maybe he just missed her, but she isn't in "the mood" :D

Thankyou for the help

Yeahh they have been mating and are only 7 months old the female is much larger then the male so I'm surprised he's picking on her but he always aims for the stitches I'm worried he's gonna open the wound up , that's a good idea maybe I should put him in a crate too that way he may get used to her again

Any time something is different about one of the flock the other birds pick up on it. So most likely she doesn't look the same to her mate and he doesn't recognize her.  I think once she has healed and is back to looking like her old self he accept her again.  So do what the vet said and keep them from being able to interact unless you can place her in a safe pen where he can visit but not get to her.  And remember that fox will be back so make sure to keep your ducks safe.

Thankyou
Yeahh I thought that would be the case , I'm gonna keep her in for a couple of weeks and then put her back in the coop once she's healed , it was my fault it got dark at 4pm and I wasn't quick enough to put them away , the fox only targeted her and it didn't kill her it just mauled her neck , I can't believe she's alive I'm so happy I've learnt my lesson tho, at night I keep the others in a locked shed with loads of straw and bedding I haven't seen the fox since but I can smell that horrible fox smell all where the shed is, there's no way he can get in there but I still check it each time I put them away

I have a question. Are drakes more aggressive in the spring? I have 2.A young Ancona boy, and the Gigantic Pekin.I am down to 2 females for each boy, we gave 3 of our ducks away, and we didn't expect to loose an Extra 2 hens, but we did. Right now, there is no fighting between the boys, so I am hoping 2 on 2 will work, so far they have been doing good I guess.

It really will depend on a few things one when they decide who is dominant there maybe some pushing shoving or out & out fighting between them. You should try and let them work it out as long as neither is injuring the other.

And who the girls decide they like the best. 2 females for each boy doesn't mean that is the way it will end up come mating season. At one time I had 3 Muscovy drakes and each had their own girls but any time one of the females would venture off by herself she was fair game for one of the other drakes. Having enough space so each group can keep their distance is important too. I don't think I'd pen 2 drakes up with their females that would probably ask for trouble. Now I have 1 Muscovy drake and 1 Runner drake and after the initial breeding frenzy when the Runner became sexually active and was chasing down the Muscovy females they have now gotten into their 2 groups Muscovy's and Runner/Buffs. And no fighting from the boys. Which I am very happy about since my scovy is huge and my Runner is so tiny.

So it depends on the drakes really. You might want to consider in spring looking for a couple more females. My scovy drake has 4 and my Runner drake has 7.

We our flock was up to eleven. Our drakes did that. We got rid of one drake, and two hens awhile back.I'll look for hens.

The male Ancona was actually brought in as a duckling, along with his 3 sisters (One of them is dead). So the smaller guy hasn't been challenging Pekin drake yet anyways.
