The Duck Thread

$4 was what I was thinking too thanks! I can't wait to be swamped! We have always talked about having chickens but never knew how much we'd love them and the ducks! I have a pretty good place to sell them from so we're going to see if we can make a fun little side project with it. At least halo pay for feed lol.

First I would suggest you get only females. Unless you want to hatch ducklings there is no need for the males. Females will lay just as many, if not more, eggs on their own.

Now, I am partial to my Cayugas and my Khaki Campbells. I also have Blue Swedish which are alright but not anywhere near as friendly or funny as the others. Just my opinion.

Enjoy your ducks.\
No males, huh? That's what I told my hubby....as he was wanting to house our chickens and new flock of ducks together. But our chicken coop is way too high - 3ft and then I've heard that male ducks may harm hens if mating with them. So with that fear.....we are pulling together pics and plans for building an duck house. Not sure how realistic a drake would be able to mate with a hen - heard chickens run faster than ducks. But yes, I'd love to have some Khaki's and he's wanting Pekins for their beauty and meat.

:thumbsup Good deal, that's better than here, only eggs people want are chicken eggs.

$4-5 is going rate for chicken eggs. Ducks are $7. But I'm towards the west coast.

Chicken eggs here in northern PA seem to be going for $3. I work at a local crazy popular gourmetish hotdog and craft beer place and I talk about my ducks all the time so I found a few people that were looking for them luckily. I was known in town as the Weiner Queen but quickly becoming the chicken lady lol. Not sure what's worse.

I'm having a hard time right now with my boy girl ratio. At the moment we have 4 adult Drake's and two females. Not counting the Muscovies they don't really seem to join in the conflicts of the smaller ducks. Trying to find some adult Campbell or Rouen females to help with it. Don't really want to get rid of any.

I'm on the east coast, the Organic "cage free" or "free range" eggs go for about 3.99 but that's about as high as they go. I don't think people here would pay$5 a dozen, they were complaining about $3.50 last year

I hear ya! It's the feed prices that's upping the price of eggs. When they started rising - now $16 for 40lb of Purina's Layena, I had to up my egg prices from $3, $3.5 and then $4 - everyone complained. And then the Avian Flu hit a few years ago, so store priced eggs were pricing very similar to my $4/doz. But you know what, once you get a good base of customers....they don't stop buying. The store-quality eggs are really anemic looking and bland!

Yeah.

Love my Rouen. Muscovies are my favorite so far. They are so funny and the chirping is pretty cute. We didn't want them at first but I'll have over 15 of them by the end of summer. They can be pretty.
I'm hoping to get Ancona, Cayugas, and swedish to add to our Mallards (mine are little jerks)

BEAUTIFUL avatar! I love LDG's. Pyrenees?
Drakes will harm and can even kill chickens when trying to mate with them. They are not anatomically the same. It will happen if the drake doesn't have enough ducks to keep him busy.
