The Duck Thread

This is a weird question, but here goes! I have one duck, she is black, she has no mate, per say. I have two peacocks, one continually mates her. We noticed she was not going in the coop with her chicken friends. today we found her with an enormous amount of eggs she is sitting on next to our home,.. IS IT POSSIBLE, I mean really, a peaduck???

Will they hatch? Absolutely not but that doesn't mean she isn't broody and just sitting for the heck of sitting. Those eggs are not fertile and will not do anything other than rot because you have no male duck. Ducks lay reguardless, so she will lay with no males present. Since she is a lone duck I highly encourage you to get her at least one buddy. They really don't do well on their own when they have no other ducks. Another female would be prefect to keep her company so she isn't lonely.

We're getting there!!!

We decided to let our ducks hatch some eggs. Today is day 1 of not collecting. One of our girls seems to prefer her own nest to the box, which is in a dirt patch out in their run. Should I leave it or put it in the box? How many should i let them lay? There are 2 Rouen & 1 peking. Not sure if they all want to sit or not. Any advice is appreciated :)

I personally let mine lay wherever they want... If one of mine was out in the open, I would try to find a way to put a leanto over it. Piece of plywood securely propped up ...? And my ducks lay what they feel is a good number, then start sitting. If you want to limit what they hatch, date each egg with a pencil and when she starts to sit, take the oldest eggs out.

About how many do they lay before sitting? I think one of our girls is hiding her eggs. I keep only finding 2...
