The Duck Thread

Should I take some pictures of DH giving a duck a calcium pill?

-Kathy

Yes, yes, and yes! Thank you, Kathy!

I always request meds in liquid form if I can get them that way. Much easier to give it since you can do it with a syringe. I get a small dish of water to put in front of them afterward, which usually works. Our compounding pharmacy gives us a selection of flavors ducks like. Yeah, right. The water right after helps make sure they wash it down, and they seem eager to wash it down.

That would be helpful for me, K.

Quote: Okay, I'll see what we can come up with . For the record, I will catch the bird and tell him "open bill and insert pill as far back on right side as possible", then I'll let you know what he has to say. Heck, maybe I'll have him type up something in his own words. Not gonna happen tonight, but maybe tomorrow?

That will work, but I think you would have to use distilled water or there is a chance that the Baytril could bind with the calcium in hard water.

Never would of thought of that, we have very hard well water. Would bottled water or water from a dehumidifier work? We stuffed it in a piece of bread.. didnt work the best took quite a few tries.

It would have to be water with no calcium. Here, this might help:

It's for liquid, but same applies when giving pills.

Thanks for that. The photos are nice and clear as to where to put it.

It's funny, for my dogs I always get meds in pill form. I let some butter soften on the counter, they just put a glob of butter on my finger with the pill on it and tell the dog to come get it's "treat". They know that word and think the medicine is their treat and take it with no problem. Birds are not so easy!

Bad things come in 3s and it happens that two off them were duck related. Qbert was attacked yesterday and suffered several lacerations of varying degrees and size. At the same time I found one of my mallards had started limping only to discover bumble foot. Feed store is luckily located across the highway, picked up vetericyn which has been applied to both situations( details of the whole morning are on my thread) qbert has made it the night and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the weekend. The mallard is good too just unhappy she's isolated.
