The Duck Thread

Yeah, to show and sell to people and stuff. I mainly keep chickens for they're companionship and they're basically my pets. I also like getting eggs and especially showing mine :)
What breed are you focusing on? I really like the egg factor also. They do make good pets don't they, have you entered any in shows?

d'Uccles, 'cause they're my favorite breed. I've entered mine in two shows, in both I won in my division in fitting &showing and in type I did average. I really want to get some good quality birds from Cackle Hatchery soon, hopefully they'll do better on type judging.

I come from the countryside, I'm incubating duck eggs but have 5 13 week chickens.
We killed most of our large predators in England long, long ago, but the foxes are pretty starving, desperate animals.
I built a massive enclosure a few months ago; 25ft long, 6ft high and 8ft wide. I also dug the wire in over 1ft into the soil, with a 1.5ft skirting inwards.
Build an enclosure like you're protecting them against a desperate hungry person. Don't underestimate the thought process of a predator who is a natural problem solver.
Create awkward and sharp edges at weak points, such as where 2 lengths of wire are connected together.
Electric fences don't put off animals if they're starving, they learn that a sharp zap and then they're in, is totally worth it, unless it's REALLY high voltage.

I wish you the best, sounds like your off to a good start.

Yeh they're due to hatch on Friday and I can't tell you how excited I am, to the point where I've completely forgotten to get excited about much else :)

it happens to the best of us.

Yeah, I bet! What breed are they?

I have no idea! It's from a group of about 25/30, semi indian runner - chocolates, whites, looks like there's some magpie and mallard in there too.
I don't know why people rave about pure breed anything, hybrids and mongrels are more exciting, original and they seem to have better lifespans!
I'm sure I won't be able to resist posting photos of the newbies :)
