The Duck Thread

He sure is handsome!  I'm hoping mine survive for you know 10 years or more (high hopes here) and then maybe I'd like about 1/2 or a full dozen.  I love watching them march across the yard.  And you are spot on, sweet, but messy haha.
Thankyou conner is my baby and his coloring is perfect. Our ducks arent the friendliest but its still fun to watch them.

Mine will hang around me, but absolutely will not tolerate being held. If I have a good treat they'll eat out of my hand and may let me touch them about 1/2 a second. I can live with it because then I just rely on the dogs or chickens for my critter snuggles haha

...except they are not great flyers.  They make it to about their tip toes :) but their heart is there.

Lol! It's probably best they are not great fliers, you would be chasing them all over and then clipping their pretty wings. As long as they have the right attitudes and make you happy, that's all that matters. I have 2 crested Peking, 1 crested mallard, 3 Cayugas, all female, and 1 Cayuga drake that isn't mature yet. The 3 cresteds are mature and laying, the 4 Cayugas are younger but running with the cresteds and loving life, none of my ducks are very friendly, but I enjoy watching their antics anyway and I love the tasty eggs. I have a goose that loves climbing in my lap and snuggling, and a gander than likes to lean on me for scratches, so I get all the cuddling I want from them.

My cresteds are named Daisy duck (the largest named by my kids), Ivory (again named by kids), and Ebony (named by me, her original name was Brownie but I did not like that). I am trying to think of names for the Cayugas, they have gorgeous green abd purple highlights on their heads and wings. I'm kinda leaning towards Jaden for the male. My kids want me to name the females, Sapphire, Emerald, and either Amethyst or Jade. I don't know why they want jewel like names, maybe their colors, lol. But I think Jade and Jaden is way to close sounding. The geese have a hodpodge of names, we have Snow, Jasmine, Peaches, Cream, Maybel, Jezzabelle, Gertrude, and Noel. Noel is not going to be staying with us much longer. Snow and Noel are both ganders, the rest are supposedly females. If I can't find Noel a home, and I'm willing to send 1 companion with him, then he is going to end up on the Christmas dinner table. Noel is too friendly to end up as dinner though, so I am trying to find him a home where he can live a long, happy life. We also have 26 chickens, but only 3 of them have names, we have Screwball the head rooster, Smoke the younger but larger rooster, and Queeny the head hen who was named by my dad, lol. Add in our 6 dogs and 5 cats and we have a zoo here, lol. I get hours of enjoyment just being with my animals.

I agree its best they can't fly. My favorite part of the day is right before the sun goes down all the critters are scattered across the yard looking for one last snack. It's just so peaceful. Hearing about your zoo makes me want to expand mine haha I just really enjoy my critters.

I love your names by the way. Besides Maverick and Goose we have a rooster named Magnet and his hens; Noodle, Supper, Hook, Naughty, Trouble, Sass, Pearl, Banana, Omelet, Scramble, and two chicks that aren't named yet. (have to see what gender we're dealing with :) ) Maybe I'll name one Henry if it's a cockrel to carry on the memory of Henriegga. She was my most favorite hen.

Then there are the fur babies. A German Shepherd named Hunter and a Shetland Sheepdog named Chuck. Can't forget those two.
