The Duck Thread

can i write on the eggs with a Sharpie so i know which eggs are new and how old the rest are or will that hurt the baby ducks

I use sharpie all the time and it has never caused any problems. Sharpies are non toxic and dry very quickly. Any issue for the unhatched poultry is neglible. In fact, I use an assortment of hues to color code eggs in m incubator.

Yes he will join our flock when he is bigger
Well once the little one gets settled in he'll be right at home. Just as other have said spend time just being there and some really tasty treats like peas and romaine lettuce and of course those tasty dried meal worms should make him feel comfortable around you in short order. Look forward to a pic once you get him/her home

how do you candle duck eggs?

Try taping a toilet paper roll onto a bright flashlight. I use tinfoil to rap the base of the tube onto the flashlight (stops the light from escaping, and keeps the light concentrated) my flashlight is bigger than the tube so the tinfoil and tape hold it on. Then I go in a dark room and put the egg on the other end. Shine the light through the end where the air sack should be, by day three you should see blood vessels really easily with this homemade candler. It's really neat when the chick( or duckling in your case) gets big and you can see them move. My flashlight is bright enough you can even see the quality of the shell ( if your selecting for incubation this would be handy)
:) try it, it's cheap and effective
