The Duck Thread

First time duck & chick mom. We have 9 chicks (3 RIR, 2 Araucanas, 2 Black Jersey Giants, 1 Black Australorp & 1 Isa Brown) and 8 ducks (3 Peking, 3 Rouens & 2 Khaki Campbell) just shy of 4 weeks ago. They are all kept in a 5x5 foot brooder. I noticed last night the smaller KC is pulling (not nicely grooming, like yanking) out feathers on the other ducks and nipping occasionally at the chicks. Is it bored? Not sure what to do.

Maybe not enough room? I had one duckling that was mean to everyone else for a while and then chilled out. She was smaller too so I think she was making up for her size by being mean so she didn't get picked on.

It's 5 feet by 5 feet. I can't make it any bigger and it needs to stop snowing & melt so we can finish their coop and they can have tons more room.
At 4 weeks I'd hang a romaine head in their brooder it will keep them busy for a while. Mine loved to nibble on it and it keeps them occupied also if you can which if you have snow you may not be able to but digging up some turf with the dirt attached [free of any kind of spray] and put in the brooder they will make mince meat out of it but it is so good especially for the chicks to help build up their immunity for when they go outside.Be sure to put out some grit when feeding anything besides their starter.

I have been trying to sprout some wheat I got from the feed store for them to munch on, but no luck yet. They love romaine lettuce when I give them some, don't want to over feed them. I did start adding some chick grit to their food. It takes them a bit to warm up, but they love "attacking" my sweatshirt strings.

This is what it did to one of our Rouens :-( the guilty KC is also in the picture. Thinking about separating that one.

What is blue kote?
TSC carries it and it's very safe to use anywhere except eye or mouth. it has gentian violet in it so it covers by making the wound or what ever your trying to disguise purple. cheap too. I finally found it with a dauber inside instead of the spray. you have to be very careful when using it because anything it touches will be purple for a long time or forever if you look at some of my clothes and towels. But it is wonderful for wounds for disguising wounds too. and for discouraging pecking because it totally throws off the duckling who has been pecking. works great for chickens too.

Ok I have candeled the 5 eggs, that I set last Wednesday and only one is fertile, from what I can tell all the others just look like normal eggs, and there is one with the spider thingy inside
