The Duck Thread

Ducklings take longer than chicks, so let them be for a while.  I had 2 in my last hatch that took 40+ hours, and turned out perfect.  I was preparing myself to step in at 48 hours, but mine made it out just before that.  Talk to them, sing to them, keep them active and vocal ... but don't panic and help too soon.

Thanks everyone. A couple look they are now trying to pip a little ways from the first pip. Hopefully when i get home later there will be some progress.

Hey Everyone! I need your help. I'm located in Pueblo, CO and I need a good vet to look at one of my ducklings. I believe it may have Brooder Pneumonia.

Yesterday I had a duckling start to wheeze bad. Almost like it was constantly gasping for air. This happed most of yesterday. I did some research and found Brooder Pneumonia. I looked at the brooder in my shed and I found mold. I quickly got everyone out and moved them to my basement for the time being. This morning I woke to the duckling dead. I noticed a larger one having a hard time breathing and standing/walking. I'm worried that it could have affected it as well. If anyone knows someone I'd greatly appreciate the imput.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe, I'm not from CO so I can't recommend a vet for you, but since you said you found mold I was wondering if you looked up Aspergillosis? I had a 6week old duckling die from that when she foraged in moldy wood chips and the symptoms sound very similar. I know for sure the cause of death because I sent her to my local university for a necropsy. There are antifungle drugs that can help if it is apergillosis. When I searched your area Mesa Veterinary Clinic had good reviews and accepts bird patients. Good luck!
Edit to say: I just looked up Brooder Pneumonia, and it's another name for aspergillosis, so I guess I should have done that first! No wonder the symptoms sounded the same. I hope you are successful in finding a vet!

Sorry for your loss.

Probably best to send off the deceased one for a necropsy, then take the other one to a vet. Here are some links for you:

Hope that helps.

@duckies1230 just go to the first list of duck forums, right after you choose duck under other poultry. Search the complete forum list for toxic plants, poisonous plants, etc. There are some amazingly complete lists!

Please excuse the basic directions. Sometimes people confuse the COMPLETE list of duck threads and "the duck thread" as being the same. I recognize your name, but I then, only recognize the usual suspects, lol. I haven't been here very long, so again, sorry if the directions were a big DUH.

Btw, if I hadn't have read so many different list, I wouldn't have stopped my ducks from eating potato plant leaves last night during garden bug hunt time!! Eek!

Thanks for the help everyone. I was able to get ahold of a clinic up in Colorado Springs. My wife is taking the duck up there right now. Hopefully everything will get taking care of.

@Julie Bird finally got a pic of Tiggy showing his purple wingbar.
It turns from green to blue to purple with the slightest variation of position.

And the brown on Juice just kinda blends...

And a new shot of Opie

And Chibs being silly! Look at all those freckles!
