The Duck Thread

I'm new at this also. Raised my drakes from ducklings and purchased my female before spring. I had no idea she would lay so many. Now I'm worried about the eggs, I naturally think they go bad after a day or so of being outside but I guess not. I'm going to post a pic of my ducks and the candled egg. I need some advice

Fire away will do our best to answer any questions u have.

I feed duck and goose starter crumbles softened with water.

But is your medicated?? I think that is what the concern was about

I would like to respectfully advise caution, nonetheless. We have a feed store in the area that accidentally gave the medicated chick starter to their turkey poults and ducklings last year. It killed all of them over night.

I would say the same but I know in the past I have giving my ducks the medicated chick started and from my experience, zero issues, then I did my research and found that there's just not enough medication in the food to do such damage. But your right, it would depend on the place and ingredients...

Random question... I was using rugs on the floor of the ducks' pen. I had such high hopes. Alas, after 2 weeks or so, even with daily washing, they are RANK! Like cooking kiddie pool water.

Sooooo, looks like stall mats may be in my future. Dang. One of my initial hesitations was how hot the mats would get, even under a sun shade. I'm attaching a pic so you can get an idea of where they'd be. I'm cleaning, so the shade is off the top. Don't judge... Lol. Kansas summers can be brutal like Texas, with less humidity. The famous Kansas wind means it feels like someone's breathing on you. Or a convection oven. Unfortunately, you can see how much shade is available. It hasn't gotten over 92* in the pen so far, but STILL! Sheesh! I've been putting ice in their "pool" and duck-cicles in their waterer. I just need to figure out how to minimize the water situation in front of the coop!

I love my ducks! Would love to spread the duck love to my family...they want my ducks but I'm not giving them up. Is the egg supposed to look like that? She is still laying an egg a day and she is not yet sitting consistently

Looks like a normal egg to me. If she is not sitting yet she hasnt filled her clutch. If you are wanting to find out if they are fertilized break one open. What kind of duck?

The egg looks fine to me but i'm not a expert on how eggs look but most eggs won't look fertilized till much later with the veins and darker yolk and you duck maybe waitig till she has about 12 eggs before she does her sitting
