The Duck Thread

Ok let me prewarn you, once she stops the circulation to that bubbly thing, your going to have to give her Vitamins, food and water almost immediately, Why because that bubble thing is about one day of nutrients for her and since it does not look like it's going to absorb, she will lose that nutrient.. they can go about three days without any food or water, of course we don't want to do that, but for her, shes down to about 2 days.. So it's going to be very important that she eats and drinks right away..

Has she attempted to get out of the cup yet??

Kind of worried a bunch of eagles or some kind of big birds are surrounding my house so I'm scared there going to take my ducks...

There my ducks could they get taken by the eagles or the big birds

I would confine them for a few day's. Then make a area just for them.. Do you have a dog that won't hurt your duck's? Boy yes I would be on high alert..

After working with a pit bull rescue for years, I'm very familiar with banding. Any special instructions for Cocktail?
Lacrystol, thank you for always trying to help and for sharing your knowledge. Win or lose, it's lessons learned.
Well Like I always say Don't thank me yet, once she is out and running around, thennnnnn maybe.. LOL

I'm sitting here wondering if we tied her off if that would make the process go faster for her to close up. I don't think I really want to take the chance, I would rather see what she does..

Not really. What vitamins. She has sipped water. Plain. On hand I only have Brewers yeast tablets (my dogs)and niacin. Best guesstimate on circulation shutdown?

A big bird, of course it could happen the first thing though that they may do, is swoop down and peck at the head to try and open it up for the instant kill.   Then they would carry it off.

Ok thank you... I'm new with ducks... Here's a pic of there cage

This is great, just put a tarp of sorts on top for the bird's above, Although it depends on what type of preditors you have..

Ok has she tried to poop at all? we may want to give her something to drink but lets wait until tomorrow.

NOT to freak you out because I think you are DOING a WONDERFUL JOB, and you are doing ALL you can to save her..

But Tonight is going to be your SCARIEST moment. I don't know why this is but if she's going to give up on us, she will sometime during the night...honestly I don't think she's even considering it. She's a very very strong duck and is doing all she can right now..

I have measured her sac from the first pic you sent to me to this last pic and it has not shrinked down at all. so again, I beleive she's just going to close right up and forget about it dealing with it.. LOL.. so it will look funny for a while with that thing just hanging there but she should be OK...

I had a chicken with the same issue, rushed out of the shell, didn't give himself time to finish and sure enough, his sac just hung there, it finally died and fell off. NOT HIM his sac.... LOL I did have to keep him separate because the other chicks would peck the heck out of it.
They are very curious creatures when they are young. got to get into everything... LOL

I feel horrible. I found a duck egg in a lake, I picked it up and took it home. I candled it, I never have been around duck eggs at all.(Well I have but not fertile ones..)  there was was a white dot which I thought was a water bubble. I figured it wasn't good so I..cracked it open.. I realized what I thought was a water bubble was really a white dot which I am pretty sure means it's fertile. I wish I could have done some research!!! So mad at myself..at least I will know better next time..it may not have been viable anyways due to it being in the lake..I still feel bad though..:(

Also, I have hatched quail eggs but the quail embryos were much more mature.

Some times you just never know.. We love quail egg's boiled.. Quick and easy snack.. For our last 4th of July we served deviled quail egg's at our B.Y.C. Seed box exchange.. We are hosting another one this 4th.. What is everyone doing for the 4th.. We just put our flag up today..

When you say Niacin are you talking about the human tablets??

estimate shut down, OH boy, it really depends on her, it's been several hours already and even though she's making some progress she's in no rush. I know you don't want to hear this but possible by morning. again we have to Cross our fingers and hope that she pulls through the night and not give up.
