The Duck Thread

Lacrystol I'm just worried that when they are independent adults they won't get in the kennel at night. If they will, then be sure that I will lock them up tight!!! Where I am is not attached to any woods and I have not seen any foxes or coyotes, better hope I don't either because I have a gun with their name on it

I love all animals but I need to protect my ducks... They are my babies.
Ok well ducks are NOT like chickens, Chickens will march right into a coop or where ever to there roosting box and call it a day. Ducks they do not do this, you have to physically drive them into the kennel. I have 36 ducks, I use a rake and i guide them right into bed. If I didn't put them to bed, LOL they would stay out ALL night, PARTY TIME. LOL, so you have to guide them into it.

Now you MAy have to do one group at a time Like I do, I have to do the first group of 8 then the next group of 5. Yeh, They all just can't go in at the same TIME. GRRRR...

I only have 4 and they stick together like glue but what if I start herding them and they go in the pond or fly away, won't be much I can do then. I will cross that bridge when I get there. I'm such a worrier lol. Right now they are 5 weeks old and safe in their pen having a grand ole time :)

well remember your not chasing them into the pen, your guiding them, so you basically keep them in there group and walk behind them, the first time you usually have to go slow, with mine and you can train them the same, is when they wonder off to the left, I put out my left hand, and then they will go to the right , if they go to far off the right then I stick out my right arm, Until I can get them in a straight line to the pen. Once they are in BOOM the rush is on, you quickly and as fast as you can close them up.

now If one perhaps breaks away, no problem, keep working with the others to get them in,, the one Will be lost and Find the group, then you can get him in a join the crowd.

it's going to take several tries before they understand what you are doing. They will not get it the first or the second or even the third time, you just keep working with them.

Now when mating season kicks in, LOL, you can FORGET EVERYTHIng. i just said... that's when I have to get my rake out, Hand signals no LONGER exist....GRRR,

I will get them all in the coop and sure enough ONE male has to get his romance on and start chasing a female, what does that female do? HEAD right out of the coop. GRRRR, so we have to chase her back in but when I open the door Guess what, YEP, They all think it's time to come out, and we have to start ALL OVER.. So mating season is a pain in the butt for me when dealing with 36 ducks... LOL

Is mating season only once a year? Also, do you have mallards? When were you able to tell their sex?
no, not quite.. LOL I don't have mallards but grey calls which is the mallard color basically. check the tail feathers, head feathers once they come in i believe you have some time yet.
