The Duck Thread

How are your babies? Inquiring mind's want to know..

Sorry, I meant to update everyone but I've been so busy! An almost four year old daughter, almost 2 year old twin boys, husband who travels for Union ironwork, 3 dogs, 3 cats, 3goats, a turkey, 10 chickens, 8 newly hatched chicks, 2 four month old ducks, 9 one month old ducklings, 10 more eggs due anytime now in the incubator. We lost one ducklings for sure but the others made it. It must have been too cold when they were wet. It was hot outside and they're 50% feathered but the water was cool. When I got hem under the heat lamp in the house they started perking up slowly. It just blows my mind that they could have gotten hypothermia and died/almost die in a matter of 15-20 minutes!! I'm playing it safe from now on, that's for sure!

What are those dark speckled eggs?

One thing I keep on hand, for all emergencies, electrolytes. Dogs, ducks, rabbits and humans get electrolytes whenever they're feeling poorly. In a case of overheating or hypothermia definitely! If you can't find animal specific (TSC, online) and you're in a pinch, pedialyte is what I use, Gatorade or such when desperate! I'm so glad to hear your babies are on the mend!

X2 on the pedialyte and gatorade, they're great for correcting hydration in a dehydrated bird. Another thing I keep on-hand is a bottle of dextrose just in case I think they're hypoglycemic.
