The Duck Thread

My duckling just hatched last night. So I don't know if it will be ok for a little while until it can be introduced to other ducklings. As you can tell I am new to owning ducks

An unbreakable mirror in with the duckling with make it feel like it has some company. Some also like something soft to cuddle up with. The more time you can spend with the duckling the better, but the best thing to do is add some friends as soon as you can.

Edit: by adding friends, I mean just having them nearby each other so they can see one another at first. Gradual introductions once they're all the same size.

Other than what's already been mentioned, Appleyard, Aylesbury, and Saxony are in the same weight class. Have you decided to get another one soon?

Well, my duck diaper is being sent in the mail today. I'm going to see how the house duck thing goes. If not good then I'm going to have to get another one sooner than expected. Or I was thinking if it goes really well, his new friend could also be inside... Even though the dh will kill me. He's already saying JoJo can't be upstairs when the baby is born so he will have to go back to the basement which ain't happening! Maybe it will be me, ducks, and my babies, divorce is going to be in my near future if we can't agree on JoJo. Lol well seriously I hope not. :lau

I need to read up on Muscovy. I thought they were much smaller than that. I don't know much about them except that you have to hose them off the roof at night to get them to go to bed.

I'm not sure that I am posting this right. Grrrr. Anyway, Just recently, we had a coon break into our coop and kill my male mallard. He and the female have been together since they were chic's and were the only two ducks we had. After the loss, my female understandably was upset. She quacked for hours. After reading a forum on here, it was suggested that a new duck might help. It hasn't been very long. She seemed to take to her new friend really well but she still quacks up a storm. Granted, she, quacked before but it wasn't bad. I have neighbors and don't want it to be a problem. Will she be ok ? Please help

I think she will. Ducks develop close bonds with their mates and flockmates, and they mourn just like humans do. It's very possible that she'll be out of sorts for a while, but she should come back from it as time goes on. Having a new friend that she's already getting along with well is bound to help some. Just give them attention and healthy treats, and of course you want to fix whatever in your coop was a vulnerability if you haven't already.

The forage blocks are ment for a snack, but i've gone through over 100pds. of feed in a week and i do give them oyster shell and dog and cat
food. Right now I have pretty close to about 50 to 60 chickens, but most will be going to the sale soon. I've tried the vitamins in water they
won't drink it, even if its in the big waterer.

I only put out forage blocks in winter when they can't forage and there really isn't anything to forage for. My chickens are pigs too but in summer they forage most of the day it's winter they eat the most. Your feeding them to good keep the flock blocks for winter and let them find alot of their food. If they are able to forage they will find things to eat.I don't mean don't feed them at all just cut out the FB till you need them, I think your duck even at 5.5 months old need to have feed out during day light hours they are still needing nutrients to finsih their growth and become adults. Might just be me but i look at them as teens at that age and teens are always hungry.
