but im confused. It quacks like a hen. In the past the calls have always been different. One that has more of a rasp, the drakes. And a clear quack, the hens. I know she is a she, it lays. Just wondering why a heb would have a curled duck tale and traits of a male.

He might just be a late bloomer. Wobbles made a quackish sound for a while, too. But if his head is green and his tail is curly, well, there's just no mistaking it.

I have a question for those of you who are more knowledgeable about ducks than I am. I got two ducks from a feed store probably about 2 months or so ago. I wanted two hens, but I am worried I got two Drakes. So one for sure is a male because he has a Drake curl, but the other I doesn't have it. The only reason why I'm hesitant in saying it's a hen for sure is because it also has some green feathers on its head. Can female ducks have green heads? I think it's a Rouen mix. I'm unsure of their breeds since the feed store didn't even know.

Ducks will get what looks like sex feathers occasionally. Not as common if there's a drake in the flock, but also not unheard of.

Im haveing the same issue. I bought two cayugas. They are six months in age and one is male and the other has presented itself as female, till today. She/he has quacks like a hen is smaller like a hen, yet has taken a green shine. Though both male and female cayugas should have green shine, it has presented a curled tale. Though its not as curled as the for sure drake.

Are you able to take a pic of it in good sunlight and post that? It sounds like a drake. The ducks will typically have no hint of green on their heads at any time of year. The sex feathers don't necessarily come out on two drakes at the same time, so one of them not having them doesn't guarantee it's not a drake.

thank you. I have raised since a child. And once hatched a hermaphrodite. It could lay yet breed hens and the eggs prove fertile. Yet the eggs of it never hatched.
