The Duck Thread

I know my neighbour made a quip about having one for christmas dinner!! Eh go away!
So rude. And an ignorant thing to say. I've had people sometimes say their cat would love my finches. I would never initiate a statement about someone's pet being a meal. I loved Amykins' post about the Chinese buffet.

It looks like lots of other people have their ducks laying.

Mine are only a year old, and they get oyster shells. Hm.

I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, new to this! Here goes:
My husband and I have a discussion going on. I have 2 Pekin Ducks (both females I believe) which were raised separately from the chickens, and we've let them free roam on our 9 acres, almost all open with a 2-3 acre lake. It has taken several months to get them into the water, but now they'll swim around the edges! Here's the issue: we also have 2 Arcona Ducks (1 male, 1 female) which were raised WITH the chickens, and stay in the chicken yard with them. My hubby wants me to separate them from the chickens and put them with the other ducks lakeside. We are planning on fencing in an area on the shallow end for the winter to keep the ducks contained/provide warmth/feed easier. I say the Arconas are "chicken ducks" now and would be too upset if separated. Other opinions? Thanks!
Introducing your chicken ducks to you 2 Pekins needs to be done slowly and if possible through some type of fencing so they can get use to each other and no one picks on the other, as for the large lake only problem I see with a large body of water is snapping turtles please please please make sure you don't have them, go to You Tube and check out how to find out if you do and how to get rid of them, they will rip out flesh and bite off feet of water fowl I would be heart broken for you if that happened to any of yours, and if you don't think snappers do this go again to you tube and look up snapping turtles and water fowl. Pretty graphic though. and we have many here who have lost or had injured their ducks and geese by them.

Welcome to BYC!!
