The Duck Thread

A welsh harlequin might. Most don't. You can find "egg lay rate" info in most breeder pages and in the livestock conservancy website

Egg laying breeds that get at least 14 hours of light per day will continue to lay eggs and not just Welsh Harlequins. My runner ducks lay year round. Pekins, Anconas, khakis, et al all lay By photo cycle.

They have to be able to take breaks along the way through the year or it will take it's toll on their body.

I just ordered golden cascades from Holderread Farm for Spring delivery. They are very prolific layers. My runners don't lay a egg a day like my chickens but average 5 per week year round. I am switching breeds for eggs. My neighbor is taking all of my runners.

Yeah I'm confused now too

I'm in deep south texas. My birds go out to forage 13hrs a day in spring - early fall and 11hrs a day in late fall-winter. They have plenty of shade in case they want to stay in the shade.

In south texas plenty of light for 14hrs would give you nothing but roasted ducks.

What are summer and winter like where you live?

Welsh harlequin's as i understand give up to 300+ eggs per year, but i haven't heard of a whole lot of other breeds that are said to lay that much

Some of the more prolific layers do, but they don't usually lay an egg every single day. I've read stories of ducks that lay almost every day, though, like 350-360 eggs per year. I'm thinking those were Campbells.

Really? Campbells are pretty chill. I was thinking of getting some welsh cause I thought they were the best layers

I'm getting blue sweedish ducklings and a couple of cayugad for sure cause they're so cute, but wanted to get some layers cause i've read sweedish and cayugas don't lay so many
