Ok, I put him on a clean towel. How soon can I start giving him some poly-vi-sol?

I doubt he is going to have much interest in water or feed until tomorrow you could try dribbling a drop a along his bill opening but that stuff takes nasty. Do you have poultry Nutri drench? it has a better taste. Did you clean up his belly? doing that will go along way in killing any bacteria he may have picked up. Veterycin is another good one to have on hand for times like this. Or even a nice warm saline rinse just to clean it up a bit.From reading posts from Lactystol and casportpony infection is what you have to worry about with these types of hatches. .

About benzocaine... Like all of you, I read that it should be avoided, but I wasn't convinced, so I did some digging and found the source. Seems like *one* person on BYC had a rooster drop dead after using an antibiotic ointment with pain relief, that person said later that they weren't sure that it was the cause of death.

I have a stypic powder that has benzocaine in it and I have used it on many birds with no I'll effects. Have also used an eye drop with lidocaine. Think about it... people also use procaine penicillin, right? Anyway, yes, birds are more sensitive to "caine" toxicity, but the amounts in stypic powder, ointments and eye drops are very unlikely to cause any harm.

Look at the picture on the stypic powder box, there is an Amazon Parrot on it. If it were that dangerous there is no way that a company would market and sell such a product for use on such a pricey bird.

I still have more research to do on "caine", but for now I an convinced that stypic powder is safe.

I know you directed this at Kathy, but I think she should leave it til it heals a bit... said styptic was used and it has copper sulfate in it (at least mine does), that will kill bacteria...

Oh okay I haven't used styptic just blood stop[not sure if that is the same thing] I didn't know it had something in it to kill bacteria. Thanks.

I'm always torn on this... Not sure I'd want to disturb it too much and start the bleeding again, but I don't like the idea of it's belly being caked with flour and corn starch either. Maybe make a diluted betadine and just gently apply it every hour?

When I have one bleeding I apply pressure with steril gauze until bleeding stops, then squirt chlorhexadine or betadine on it. If bleeding doesn't stop I use the stypic powder, wait about 30 minutes, then squirt chlorhexadine or betadine.

I think blood stop is a name styptic is sold under, I could be wrong though, lol... I just worry that any liquid will open it back up... at that size bleeding out is quick... :/

I didn't use a lot of flour/cornstarch/styptic so there is no caking. I have dabbed it with some Betadine. He's resting well now so I don't want to disturb him anymore. I am definitely going to keep him separated and on clean towels.

Such a precious baby, prayers he does great and after a nice recoup is up running with the rest.
