The Duck Thread

Potato has been doing alright. I'm glad to see he's not distancing himself from the others. He seems to taken a liking to the Pteroduckyl, my chocolate runner girl. I know he's mated her before, but he was always rather snappish towards her. Hopefully he can start being a gentleman to her like he was with Waffles.

Duckasaurus tried a little courting behavior on him

But he was clearly not interested. I hope she doesn't take the rejection personally, lol.
My hens love to bob their heads and then chase the drakes they like away from the rest of the flock. Do your girls do this?
Adorable ducks! The chocolate hen is spectacular!

Aw, it looks like he has lots of company. I'm sure he will take comfort in those girls come spring.

They are just trying to comfort him. lol  Hopefully things will work out in the flock. I think they will.

I think they will. I'm glad we added more ducks to the flock this year (too many more lol). He would be pretty lonely if we hadn't.

Thanks! Certain hens of mine do. The runners and mallard girl do this all the time to Potato, not so much the other drakes. I've never seen any other of my hens (WH, Cayuga and buff) do that. My pekin hen Waffles used to bob her head, but only to people, lol. She would point her beak straight down and bob up and down and make this chattering that sounded like she was saying "look at it look at it look at it". It was adorable.

I have no doubt he will. I suspect he's the father of all the ducklings we raised this year. Waffles was his special girl, but he certainly got around ;)

She sure looks like a boy. She must cause the others boys such confusion lol. Very pretty though, glad she found a friend.

Haha, that's why her name is Sam (well one of the reasons) she looks like a boy

This is Biff, my next Waffles-in-training. No duck can replace Waffles in my heart, but I need a buddy duck. It's only been a couple days since her death, but I can already feel the lack of liveliness and personality in my flock. Not that I don't love them too. Waffles was just my gem. Biff sounds almost exactly like her and is LOUD. She also eats fairly readily from my hand, although she didn't today. It took a long time for anyone to bolster enough confidence to eat from my hand without Waffles there to lead the way. Jeepers eventually crept up and got her treats from my hand, and Frankenduck (the drake I suspect is Potato and Waffles' son) soon followed. But Biff never came up to me. She just didn't have the courage without Waffles. I'm determined to work more with her and help her come around. And I can't wait for her to finish her molt, she's been looking scrappy for a while!

Here she is next to Waffles about a month ago eating from my hand. I wish she had this confidence still. Jeepers and Frankenduck are also in this picture. Those four were my little hand feeder gang.
