The Duck Thread

I went to Wal mart but couldn't find any Brewers yeast in powder form, only in tablets. Farm n Fleet didn't have it either. I read that frozen peas are a great form of niacin so I got some of those. I cut the peas in half because I figured it might be easier for them. They LOVED them. I'll keep searching for some powdered Brewers yeast though

Just make sure they get some grit with the peas. You can also use a b complex vitamin. Liquid form is easiest.

Hi, can anyone let me know if i should assist anymore. I think i really know the answer, but just want a confirmation.
this is what the AC looks like. to me it looks like the duck has not broken through or moved into the AC
this is where she/he is pipping from, the side. The lowest part of the AC is on the other side of this egg. I just think she is a little malpositioned. she is not upside down.
I peeled back some membrane and I saw red veins, which means the veins still have blood flowing through, correct?
I stopped and blotted the membrane w/a damp papertowel and put her back in the bator. she is breathing and pipping (trying to hatch).
should i just keep watch and wait.?
my Q is, if she has not broken through the AC, she doesnt have enough room to move around and get out, correct?
I've been out a week and trying to catch up. How did she turn out?

My ducks randomly stretch out their legs like this.... Is this something to be concerned about? They've been doing it ever since I got them about a week and a half ago and only do it while laying down and awake.
As others have said, no worries at all. I think it's just precious to see them like this. I had one duckling that would occasionally lay with both legs facing backward. It was hilarious.

I posted this the other day on the illness forum.
I babied her for a day and gave her food and electrolytes and she was up moving around and being herself again.

Now, 48 hours later, she has the same symptoms that you will read below. Sorry, I copied and pasted. I made sure she hadn't gotten into anything, cleaned the enclosure and feeding vessels, everything. No vet around here sees birds.... I'm not sure what to do for her.

Original posting --Looking for some advice for my duck.
She hatched in August of last year and has been laying for the last month or two.

I went out to feed the flock this morning and 4 out of 5 ducks were up moving around and happy to see me, but this girl was laying flat on the ground with her legs straight back, getting covered by snow.
I wrapped her in a towel and brought her inside. I would take her to a vet, but we had a blizzard (Colorado!) and are unable to take her anywhere.

I gave her a warm bath. She floated mostly normally, tilting a little to the right.
She drank lots of water, but still hasn't gone poop and it's been several hours, which to me is unheard of for a duck.
I palated her for an egg and felt nothing.
She is able to move her head and drink the water I put in front of her, but she won't eat, even the peas and that's her favorite. She tried to move once when the cat came to sniff her, but it was a couple of inches and she dragged herself by her wings.

Unfortuntely I don't have an Epsom salt, I will try to make it to a store in the morning weather permitting.

I had some 'save a chick' electrolyte mix that I use for my hatches that she is getting now.

What else can I do for her?!
How is she doing now?

I just read that a cup of peas has between 1 and 4 milligrams of niacin.

Stoney's Guide to Raising Ducks suggests 100 to 150 milligrams of niacin per gallon of water for supplementation in the case of niacin deficiency.

The guesswork is in how much water a duckling actually ingests in a day. If a duckling actually drinks a half a cup of water a day, it would be getting (16 cups in a gallon, 32 half cups in a gallon . . . . 150 divided by 30, more or less) 5 mg of niacin from water with 150 mg niacin per gallon.

That would be about a tablespoon of brewer's yeast.

So, while green peas are a better source of niacin than a number of other vegetables, I don't think they'll hit the supplementation level recommended.

Great that you are resourceful, and my Runners are crazy about peas, too!! It's nice to have a treat for them that's healthy.

I suppose you could crush the tablets. I crush calcium citrate tablets when I need to boost calcium for the ducks.
