The EE braggers thread!!!

TW1KELL - So sorry to hear about your hen. I really like his coloring, looks much better and shinier than in the pic. He has already perked up quite a bit since I brought him home. Now I just can't wait for my little babies to get bigger so I can see what they look like! Pretty soon I will be banned from going to the feed store by my hubbie

. So far have 3 RIR girls who are about 16 weeks old, 4 little baby EE (pretty sure they are not really Araucana like they were labeled) that are about 2-3 weeks old, and my rooster.

My EEs were being wimps this morning- we finally got some much-needed rain in Texas and the girls couldn't be bothered to walk in the wet grass/clover. They hung out in the covered run with the door wide open- funny birds. They'll be three months old this weekend, and I have two roos in the mix, more than a little bummed as I live in an urban environment so there's zero chance of keeping them.

Also wanted to share photos of the grazing boxes we put in the open run. Used cedar and cage wire (1"x1" mesh) to create boxes where the pullets can only graze the tips off the grass and clover underneath. Will keep them from turning their run into a moon scape.

They have plenty of ground and their sand pit/dust bath area as well, and seem to actually enjoy laying on the boxes when temperatures rise- might be an air circulation thing- they're surprisingly smart (some times).

I was wondering if maybe he is a cross between an Auracana and an Ameraucana? That tail is rather strange - maybe he is actually "rumpless"? I have a rooster that the hens pick off all his tail feathers (he did have a tail). His back feathers do not go down like that. I can see his tail from behind - poor little featherless tail.

Check his hind end. Does he have the fleshy triangular "tail" part? If not - then he is "rumpless". From his fuzzy face I would guess Ameraucana or EE in there. He is a very pretty rooster - beautiful coloring.

ChickNmamma - will have to look and see if he will let me get that close to him. He does seem to be shaped weird in his hind end

. At least he seems to be settling in quite well today.

That is a good idea, if my birds had left a flat spot somewhere in my run I might put a few down to let something grow back too. I just wonder if they would fill it up with poops and dirt and then it would disappear... Let us know how yours does.

My EEs should be hatching this weekend

Hooray! I took the incubator off of the turner last night in preparation for the final days of incubation. These ought to have begun hatching tomorrow but given the power outage they encountered for a day and a half, I imagine things will be behind. I candled a couple last night as I was closing up shop and they are pretty well filling in the available space, so at least they're relatively close to on schedule. Time to get the brooder warmed up. On top of that, I found out my order of Cream Legbars will be coming from Greenfire next week. Provided they survive to adulthood, that could add some interesting twists to the EE mix. I'd love to see a bearded, muffed, and crested EE in my flock.

Amazing how strong willed they are to survive. Cool down seems to just slow them down, and I think the broodies use that to control hatch date of mixed date set eggs so they hatch all at the same time.

I think that mix would be neat. I might put my SFH roo with my EEs and see if I can get any of that MF coloring with blue eggs.... are we mad scientists or what?

I want to know how you get these cool colors of EEs..I got 4 and all of them look like they are going to be brown and black barred. One has some white bars in with the brown and black. They all looked so totally different from one another last week...all different shades of chipmunk striping, but as the feathers start to come in, I am wondering if they will all be "plain" brown and such. I want some really colorful ones.
