I just checked the Ideal website, hoping to see if they charge more for their "Ameraucana" chicks than for other breeds. Not available until next year so no prices. But I think they are getting WORSE than they were 3 years ago.
Ameraucanas, known as the "Easter Egg Breed", are a multicolored breed. They have beards, muffs and a normal tail with a tail head. They are often incorrectly called Araucanas, which have ear tuffs, are rumpless, and do not have a tail head which gives them a bunny tail appearance. Most of the chicks sold as Araucanas are really Ameraucanas, which are excellent, efficient producers of large eggs of many colors and shades including blue and green.
Standard weights at maturity are males-5 lbs. and hens-4 lbs.
Our poultry is purebred and represent the breed and variety; however, we do not guarantee or represent that they are show quality.
Um, no. Purebred Ameraucana hens will lay blue eggs. So they are "accusing" others of selling Ameraucanas (presumably inferior or why bother to try to fool someone?) as Araucanas. Yet they are selling EEs as Ameraucanas. I'm really surprised the APA or at least the Ameraucana Breeders Club hasn't come down on them for this. Meyer advertises Blue Ameraucana and EEs so one would expect if they ordered a Blue, they would get a purebred Blue. Could be they use the Blues to make their EEs. THOUGH, the page does say blue or green eggs so ... HOW purebred?
