The EE braggers thread!!!

I just checked the Ideal website, hoping to see if they charge more for their "Ameraucana" chicks than for other breeds. Not available until next year so no prices. But I think they are getting WORSE than they were 3 years ago.

Ameraucanas, known as the "Easter Egg Breed", are a multicolored breed. They have beards, muffs and a normal tail with a tail head. They are often incorrectly called Araucanas, which have ear tuffs, are rumpless, and do not have a tail head which gives them a bunny tail appearance. Most of the chicks sold as Araucanas are really Ameraucanas, which are excellent, efficient producers of large eggs of many colors and shades including blue and green.
Standard weights at maturity are males-5 lbs. and hens-4 lbs.

Our poultry is purebred and represent the breed and variety; however, we do not guarantee or represent that they are show quality.

Um, no. Purebred Ameraucana hens will lay blue eggs. So they are "accusing" others of selling Ameraucanas (presumably inferior or why bother to try to fool someone?) as Araucanas. Yet they are selling EEs as Ameraucanas. I'm really surprised the APA or at least the Ameraucana Breeders Club hasn't come down on them for this. Meyer advertises Blue Ameraucana and EEs so one would expect if they ordered a Blue, they would get a purebred Blue. Could be they use the Blues to make their EEs. THOUGH, the page does say blue or green eggs so ... HOW purebred?

One thing to look at is the legs. Any ameracauna will have blue/slate blue legs. If they have green legs, then they have some type of yellow leg bird crossed in somewhere. Though,@jerryse would know more on this subject. But if it is a blue, then it should have blue legs. If it's pure ameraucana, then it lays blue eggs. No exceptions on the blue eggs at all, that I know. They also have to have a beard and muffs, though not full on ear tufts, which is common of araucanas, and is actually required. Also, another tell tale sign is that most easter eggers are usually multi colored. You don't usually see hatcheries selling ameraucanas unless they are a labeled color either. Several small, though tell tale signs are crucial to the process of telling apart real from fake.

my great grandpas ameraucanas lay greenish eggs but in all other respects are ameraucana (although he was mistaken about the correct color pattern for wheaten roosters so he was unsuccessfully trying to get them a gold breast and a light colored beard until he realized his mistake) in the meantime i managed to get a pretty nice wheaten rooster ,considering, from his 'cull' pen

All my "Amercaunas" came from Meyer, have pea combs, and floofy cheeks. I have been happy with them but frankly I want to get some true rumpless birds for my collection. I think that large hatcheries can be depended on to sell hardy birds that resemble breeds, but are far from the real thing. When I want something special I buy from someone special!

I've spent REDICULOUS amounts of money on my Orpington breeding stock and it has been worth every penny. At first I tried to scrimp, but those birds have gone to freezer camp or out to pasture (if you endear yourself to me you get to stay on in the orchard) I'd rather have ONE great bird then 20 cheapies.

Ameraucana are not rumpless. Araucana are, but no hatchery currently has true Araucana.

Exactly my point. I will be buying from a small breeder.

I had some given to me that were said to be EE's but they lay pure white eggs. So likely more mutt than most, I guess? I'd like to snag a few EE hens this spring, hopefully I have luck!

I think from Eos (picture taken several weeks ago)

It isn't this brilliantly blue, I guess the kitchen lights "enhanced" it. With the camera flash it came out quite green!

1 down, 6 to go (2 of them are EEs)

Congrats!! I remember you posted pics of her on the EE sexing thread, glad to hear I guessed correctly! She is a very pretty pullet, I love the yellow/white coloring.
