The EE braggers thread!!!

'nuff said.

sex linking is creating a hybrid that creates young where males and females have different colours or markings, these young wont breed true
autosexing is from recognised pure breeds that have different marked or coloured offspring that do breed true
cream legbars are actually sex links that also breed true

Wow! So it's possible I may be able to figure out who layed which egg by the coloring? That would be great.

Yep, if you are observant and have a variety of breeds. Each individual may have their own egg characterics and habits.

For example my two 1 Y/O non-standard Black Australorps:
One lays a darker brown and larger egg than the other. It also lays less frequently.

The White Rocks:
One lays a smaller egg, somewhat darker egg that has shallow grooves on one end (which I guess means there is something hard in the shell gland??). She also lays in the community box where the other lays an egg that is almost the same diameter at both ends and in a corner grain feeder converted to a nest box. It is in the "feed room". She had laid for MONTHS AND MONTHS in the coop nest boxes, then started laying out in the bushes. When I finally found her nest (accidentally) there were 13 eggs in it, all still good. Once that was discovered she started laying in the bushes between the road and 3 rail fence. The day I found that it was by following her until she went to lay. I managed to get her back to the barn and she went nuts going in and out of every nest (One 4' community, 3 divided in an open 4' box). None were OK, I finally rigged up the corner feeder with a horse saddle pad over it for "privacy" and she has been reliably laying in it for the last month or so.

And to stay with the thread

I have 4 EEs. One is 4 years old, the others 1 year old. The older girl lays a BIG (XL or larger) fairly dark green, not olive, egg. The light colored younger one lays blue, the goldish one lays a bit lighter than the older bird, and is now up to the midrange of Large. The third lays about the same color as the older bird but smaller, she lays medium to Large.

So I'd love to hear what everyone's favorite hatchery to order EEs from is and why. I like getting a variety of colors, beards, nice temperament, good laying ability, and no genetic issues.

We ordered (2) from McMurray about 10 years ago and one came without beard (one of my favorite things about EEs!) but the bearded one was very sweet, laid eggs until she was probably 7 or 8, and is still alive today. Three years ago I got some (3) from Privett. They turned out nice, lay well, but they all look almost identical, and one has some issue always laying thin shelled, almost shell less eggs, even though everyone else has enough calcium. Most recently I ordered (5) from Cackle. The birds came in beautiful colors, but even in the mall order a couple turned out with crossed beaks or bum twisted legs (not good!); they actually note that issue on their website, so they must be having problems with it.

I got mine from Ideal. My two pullets were clean-faced, but they turned out to be outstanding layers. My pullet that ended up a cockerel was muffed, and he wasn't a complete jerk. The best part is that they were all 'pure' for the blue egg gene. From the line that I have bred from those three birds, eggs range from pale sky blue, to bright teal.
