Red Feather, It sounds to me like you make a great "Mother Hen"!

Yes at 2 weeks 85F sounds perfect. How I judge a good temperature is by watching the chicks. If they bunch up, they are too cold, if they scatter all over the brooder and start panting, too hot. Of course, whenever I have some in the brooder, I watch them a lot.

Redfeather, my only experience is w/ EE's and mine were extremely friendly from the moment they got out of the delivery box and still look for any opportunity to be petted or held and they are about 5 months old now

I got a surprize in yesterday's hatch. I had only three eggs make it to lockdown, all supposedly from crosses of white meat birds with black tailed red meat birds. One pipped at the wrong end, and eventually had to be helped out of the shell........................... I was as surprized by its appearence as its two 'siblings" [I think it may be unrelated]

I have a EE that is about that is 5 months old. Well I thought it was a she but, she hasn't started laying eggs yet. She also isn't crowing either though. At this point I don't know if it is a boy or a girl. At what age do they start laying and crowing?

Thanks for the help,

If it hasn't started crowing, look for it to start laying soon. I had four pullets that were hatched in September. These are all mutts (barnyard crosses) two of which look like EEs that just started laying. They have been on laying feed all winter, and they get 14 hours of light. So, regular EEs, in my experience, lay in about six months give or take. If it was a rooster, it would probably be crowing and actively trying to mate for a while now.

my 2 ee's started laying today 17 weeks old, 1 olive egg and 1 olive color soft egg I'm assuming it was the 2nd pullet that laid . the roosters started crowing about 3 weeks ago. they be gone now.

As a lover of EE, I'm glad the milkman had muffs and beard.

Kinda ironic I get some non EE eggs to hatch out crosses for my EEs, and one turns out to be one.
