The EE braggers thread!!!

I am counting my chickens before they hatch and have a genetics color question. What would be the expected usualish outcome of a blue roo over typical redish wild type EE? and same question but w/ a splash roo. Realizing EE are genetic wild cards of course

Good question! I will let you know in about 3 months. I put a splash Maran over my EE's. My girls are a mix of colors. But, I am banking on a bunch of blue/grey plumage. And olive eggers as well as chocolate eggers from my black/blue copper marans. My first egg hatched today. Guess it was in a hurry to come out. They are due to hatch tomorrow. Check out he web cam.

I'd be curious to see that outcome too. I think I may have a Blue Andalusian roo. I bet it would be pretty.

Well so far this morning I have 5 EE's from green eggs and 1 blue copper maran that has hatched. Hoping for many more. They all look kind of blue to me. What do you think?

So, here's a new question I have: what is the most common type of cross that hatcheries use to produce EE's? Do they have Ameraucanas that they put under random roos, or do they just have a big ol' pen of third and fourth generation EEs?
I've been hunting down threads with pics of various EEs, and I've noticed that the most common coloration patters I see resemble common Ameruacana coloration, which indicates to me that it's common to have one parent be full Ameruacana.

What a great question! I've kind of been wondering the same thing. My first two EEs had that classic partridge-ish coloring, almost like a Welsummer. I've got another now that looks like a yellow mish-mash of different bird types, complete with mini-tufts like an Araucana. (She is tailed. I need pictures of her.) I also have one home bred EE that is a cross of a partridge EE and a Speckled Sussex; she's kind of mousy looking too, but lays a very nice green egg.

I guess that's the supreme fun of EEs: they are all so different!

Why would hatcheries need to use different breeds to make EEs. Since they already a mixed breeding a ee over a ee gives a bunch of different colored birds. With crosses all offsprings will be different, some will be similar but, different. That is the difference between a pure breed and a cross breed. All pure breed offspring will look almost exactly like their parents.

Well here is the answer to what happens when you put a Splash over EE's. They look mostly blue/grey.

Caught one while hatching.

This is the only light colored one so far. With yellow legs. The wild card right there LOL

peach2U While looking at your beautiful chicks, I see that you have the eggs set up so that they on on an angle. It looks as if the egg cartons are handing at least at 45 degrees ? Is this your usual procedure and I see that it does work well. The little fuzz butt must just roll out after they have pecked their way through. Very interesting could you comment on this approach.

Hatcheries do not know what an Ameraucana is !
