The EE braggers thread!!!

The sexlink is not there to breed forward. Black sexlinks are a CROSS and do not breed true. Usually that is made with a Barred Rock hen and a RIR or NH roo. The barred hen passes the barring to all the roos, but not the pullets so that is how they are sexed at hatch.

BTW a SOLID White EE roo if he is dominate white will only produce white chicks with some leakage I would think.
SO that means possibly all chicks from those crosses will be white. Im getting hatching eggs from these crosses so I was just curious to what I might expect from them. In the pic I saw the rooster looks white with maybe a slight cream tinge.

So sad today.....a hawk got my favorite EE chick, Emma. Went looking for her when I spotted 8 vultures overhead. Saw the hawk fly away and found Emma's body. Why does it always have to be your favorite???? My youngest EE also died.....I think she died of the stress. She was untouched but dead right by the backdoor. I was letting my babies have playtime....they stay right outside in what I thought was a very protected spot. They usually are on the porch steps or underneath them. So sad!!

That is so sad.

I am so sorry! My girls are penned with a roof just because of this, we have way to many hawks here for me to take a chance...

Hey guys, had my first clutch from my own flock hatch in the last 48 hrs so I wanted to share some cuteness!

Here's what I was working with for breeding pairs:

And here's the four that hatched out! Two from each mother.

I think they look quite a bit like daddy, what do you think? The chipmunk one is pretty obvious who she belongs to isn't it. There were two of those ones, the other pipped the wrong end of the shell and didn't make it. Such a shame, she was really pretty. Lots of black streaks.

I have a question about EEs. I just bought 4 2yr old EE hens. They are all being pecked on and chased. They seem to be at the bottom of the pecking order. I found one EE hen pinned in the cross fence when they were free ranging and her back feathers plucked. I feel so bad for all four of them,

I have 3 EE in a flock of 12 and they seem to be lower in the pecking order. 1 EE is definitely on the bottom though, she is always pecked and chased away I started throwing handfuls of food all over the ground to make sure every one eats.

But if you just brought your EE hens into an already existing flock they will be on the bottom and will get ganged up on until a new pecking order is established. Just keep an eye on them and make sure they arent bullied excesively.

Thank you for your quick response. I will keep an eye out and hopefully everything will settle down soon. If I were to have an all EE flock, will the EE hens be nice to new EEs introduced? I am thinking about getting rid of the other hens and eventually have a EE flock only.

I dont think it really matters the breed. An established flock is used to each other they have an order that they all understand when a new member/members come in everything gets thrown out of whack and the lower on the todem pole will try to pick on the newer girls to change the order. All will settle down though once they figure out the new pecking order.

For instance my EE that is on the absolute bottom gets pecked by every one she doesnt peck back she just screams and runs. But when I let all the flocks free range together Rose the EE will run and find the 9 week old marans chicks and she pecks them and chases them because they are the newest.

You will always have the low chicken at the bottom of the pecking order, however I would not tolerate excessive bullying, like plucking a chicken bare. I would either remove the instigator for a week or so then reintroduce her, or remove the lowest and see if they then attack the next lowest. If the next lowest then got attacked in the same way I would definately permenanty remove the bully(s) but if the second lowest wasn't picked on as hard I would assume the chicken that was getting picked on hard was the problem and remove her permenantly from the flock.

I'm pretty pleased with the way my flock treats one another. of course there is an order, but there is some flexibility within the ranks... one can peck another for roost space and get pecked back over the feed dish... my gang doesn't need to peck at each other much, there is plenty of space, lots of roosts and 3 feeding/watering stations.

Gorgeous!

I have a newly hatched little barred, bearded, muffed, pea-combed, blue egg gene baby EE boy just dying to have a forever home....

I had a beautiful barred roo (Smore's brother) he had huge muffs & a little beard, but he was so handsome.... He was the leader of his incubator pals. One day I couldn't find him anywhere, sadly it looks like he sacrificed himself to a predator, so his hatch mates could get away safely. A sad scene it was - looked like someone ran over a down pillow with a lawnmower
