The EE braggers thread!!!

Mine did too when I first started talking about getting chickens and now she's the one out there talking with them and trying to make sure that the shy ones get enough food! LOL
LOL Sounds like my husband. He goes to the coop every night just to say "HI" to the chickens. It's so funny. Some will even come up to him now. He's a nut, but I love him.

My wife don't go nowhere near the chickens. Just as far as the eggs in the refridgerator.
She grew up with them running around everywhere and stepping in the poop so she doesn't care a whole lot about them. I grew up aroundthem to, the poop just didn't bother me.

It is funny how animals of all types grow on you. Growing up my Dad didn't want a dog and ignored her forever...then he started petting her. Now they have a different dog the other has since passed but he is retired and they are buddies he walks her daily, plays with her and feeds her.

My husband is the one who didn't want the chickens. Growing up they had a huge laying barn and butchered every year. But now he realized that not everything is a cornish x or leghorn. He does the morning chores, chickens included, and I do the afternoon. Works out great since I am not a morning person and he gets home late from work.

Yeah, I keep hoping my wife will start showing an interest in the chicken. I bring in babies once in a while for her to see. She just say "aughhhhhhhh" that it. I keep showing her pictures of my creaations ( crossbreds), jsut say "un huhh" and that is all.

Maybe one day.

hi, i have a couple of questions. this is getting very confusing to me. our local blue seal and feeds is going to have ameraucana's this spring.(chicks) now, are easter eggers the same thing? if not, what is the difference between the two looks and eggs wise? do they lay the same size eggs and are the hens the same size ? are the personalities the same? i would like to get maybe 4 of them and maybe two barred rock hens also and two silver laced wyandotte's. would they all get along? thankyou so much, julie

Yes all those breeds will get along, I have all 3 of those. Ameraucanas sold at the feed store are actually just EEs they just use the wrong name when selling them. Ameraucana lay blue eggs and look similar to EEs though they have to meet the breed standard to be an actual Ameraucana. EEs can lay a variety of colors including blue green pink brown or white, The varience in egg color is because they are mixed breeds usually a cross between a blue egg layer( ameraucana) and another white or brown egg layer. I do not have Ameraucana so I cant give you details on them but I do LOVE LOVE LOVE my EEs. I have 3 hens and 2 chicks in the brooder also a silkie/EE cross. They are my absolute FAV chickens.

If you want true Ameraucanas that breed true, you need to find an individual breeder. Chicks sold as Ameraucanas at the feed stores are EE's. Just depends if you want a breed that breeds true for showing or for breeding, or if you simply want to enjoy an unusual bird for your backyard. I have EE's and Ameraucanas and love them all! As far as personalities go, most hens tend to get friendlier once they start laying, from my observations. I've had EE's who like to lap sit. My Black Ameraucanas are supposed to begin laying any day now so I don't know if that will hold true for them. I've had several different breeds and overall the hens just seem to get friendlier once they begin laying. My Black Ameraucanas seem to be very similar to my EE's, comparing personalities at this developmental stage. The breeder said their eggs are blue/green. The Wheatens I am getting all lay a bluer egg. The EE's can be anywhere on the spectrum from pink (light brown), blue/green, brown, and rarely, a brown egg that tends toward lavender. My EE's lay a greenish/blue egg. Very pretty!

As long as the chicks are raised together they will do fine. Expect chest bumping and wing flapping as they grow but it's nothing to worry about. When the cockerels reach the "teen" stage, they all jockey for top spot but I've not had any trouble with them actually seriously harming each other. The difficulty comes when you add new adult birds to an established flock. New chicks that grow up together will establish their peck order as they grow up and should get along just fine.

The biggest determination in this discussion of EE verses Ameraucana, is that because Ameraucanas are a pure breed, all offspring will look like their parents. If you mate a certain color, the accepted SOP colors all offspring will be replicated in the chicks. The folks who are working hard to improve this breed get tired of explaining. All of this is understandable if you are a serious breeder. That said I have pure black Ameraucanas and pure recessive white Ameraucanas and I can not wait to interbreed them and turn them into EEs or OEs. I have started to do this but my year olds are not even laying yet as winter set in just as they should have been laying. They are all very pretty as are my blue and splash Marans which I also do not care for as much as EEs. And talk about snotty people on a thread

Oh well I do have good parent stock as far as my personal opinion, but my goal is to a a well mixed flock of birds sooner or later.

Also, the EE is not a breed. They are a mix. EEs will not breed true....in other words, their offspring will usually not look like them. EEs are really very wonderful chickens as they are always a surprise as how they will feather out...the egg color you get will be a surprise and they are great layers! Mine lay almost every day....they make take a day off every 10th day or so. They are one of my favorite birds, too.
