The EE braggers thread!!!

Gifa, I love the grey egg. My goal with chickens is to get as many different colored eggs as I can.... I am fasinated with the different colors of eggs. I never even knew they existed until last year when I got my first chicks. And I am 62!!!!! Ugg......getting old....boooo! Right now I only have 12 chickens, but I have chickens that will eventually give me all sorts of egg colors! Love it! And, I am trying to get some unusual types of chickens, too.

Same goal here... =)

In fact, hubby would like to add a copper maran to our flock, eventually for the dark brown egg color... I, of course, have done nothing to discourage the man's dream. =p

So, what is the best way to treat for worms? And, should I treat them even if I am not sure that is what they have? It would be a good time since some of the chickens are molting and are not laying anyway. Can you treat all of them....even the 2 month olds, or just the older ones?
I do not know much about worming, I have read some up on it, but am still solidly on the fence, however I remember there are some worming meds that should not be used during molting.

I recently added Marans to my flock they are going on 13 weeks old. They are great chickens with awesome sweet personalities. And the feathered legs are to die for. I love them and so far the rooster is sweet as pie. Hes my boy. I hope he stays sweet because Id hate to part with him. And the eggs EEEEEEEE cant wait. As much as I love the marans though EEs are still my top choice for prettiest chickens and prettiest eggs. Im gonna get a few more soon. OH Im gonna cry when I run out of room for more chickens.

I thought my girls had worms at one time, I didn't use a dewormer. I mixed in 1/2cup of molasses with one gallon of water. They all drank that for 3 days. They pooped a lot, some of it was runny. But they started to act like normal a week after that.

In my graduate nutrition class we also learn that garlic is anti-parasitic. Chop up raw garlic and mix it in with some oatmeal or scrambled eggs.
I have also read that black walnut extract will "paralyze" the worms, so they let go to be passed out with a bowel movement.

All for this is safe for humans so you can continue to eat the eggs. Trust me I'm a doctor

So would it be better to feed the molasses water which gives them diarrhea and the garlic which paralizes the worms at the same time?

I'm leaning toward rooster for this one, but as a previous poster said, age is a factor to consider. The red on the wings may not be patchy, but it is the dark rooster red, the lacing is thicker where you usually see patches. It also looks like s/he's getting white areas on the wings, which I've seen in pics of laced roosters. The comb is very red and looks to have the telltale 3 ridges, though not very well developed (again, how old?). The feathers on the saddle and head are that beautiful glassy rooster orange. (You could look under the feathers on her/his back to see if more saddle feathers are sprouting.) On the pullet side, s/he is a bit atypical and looks to have thin legs. You hear stories of chickens given away as definite roosters later laying eggs. Stranger things have happened! Keep us posted.

It's 12 weeks old and the comb is smaller and less red than the 6 definite roos that have long saddle feathers. The back and tail are more similarly shaped to my definite hen girls. I wish I had a better comparison shot!

Am I crazy? Here's a comparison to my definite roo and this one - is there a difference?

This one has patchier colouring, and longer, tall tail feathers and definite saddles coming down

This is from a few days before the pictures I posted before, but is flatter backed and the feathers are rounder. Maybe it's just a slow grower :)

Our Maran is so skittish so far! But I love the feathered legs :) I don't want to run out of room. I want a flock. Darn it, going to go and look at the MLS again...
