I'm sorry, that's awful - what happened?
My mom's German Sheppard snapped her cable chain and got into the coop. I am scared everynight because All I remember is hearing my chickens, seeing their waterer swing back and forth. Hear a HIGH PITCHED scream, walking out there shining light and seeing my mom's dogs eyes. First time we have ever seen the devil before, walking closer I shine the light in and see my hens dead. Feathers everywhere and broken necks.. My mom's 2 lavender orpingtons came out ok. Her BLR wynadotte came out ok, lots of feathers missing and in shock. Then I see one of my girls, she's in so much shock, a pulled leg, and pulled feathers. I try and check her and all she's doing is trying to jump up into my lap when she couldn't even stand..
That's all I hear and see now, but them 4 girls are doing much better. Still shooken up as it happened 1 am easter morning, but are much better. My EE hen that lived is still laying, but not my mom's wynadotte. The lavender girls are only 4 months. My bf has 3 of my EE hens and my EE rooster so they were safe.
A friend of mine was kind enough to come over and repair it and put a barrier around the coop/run so she can't get in again..
I'm getting 2 more tomarrow, an EE hen and a Barred Plymouth Rock. Then saturday my sister wants to buy me ducklings.
I myself am still shocked that it happened. Having anxiety, when that happened, my eyes opened wide in fear. I shook bad and couldn't say anything but OMG OMG.. I was crying hard too, I was out of it.. My mom said there went a hen and she was alive and running, my mom went and chased her down. I was in so much shock and having such a panic and anxiety attack that it WAS hard enough to knock me to the floor but it didn't cause I had realised some of my hens were alive and I needed to save THEM...
However at night now I am just terrefied. Any noise that sounds like them I freak out. When the dogs bark at night I freak out. I am just so scared at night now.. I loved my hens so much..

I am so sorry - that is the hardest part of having and loving anything - sometimes you can't protect them.

You did well by not falling down - you had birds that still needed you and you needed to save them. You did what you could - and that's all anybody can do.

If you are keeping the dog I would seriously suggest doing some training with her - she needs to know the birds are not play toys or her food. To protect all your animals she needs to be trained. Accidents happen - and this can happen again if you don't take steps to stop it. Fences are good - but training is better. Maybe working with her to train her will stop the fear. She isn't the devil - but she is a meat eater and she views the birds as toys or food. Train her differently. Maybe she can even protect your birds from other animals.. dogs can be trained to do that.

I wouldn't get ducklings unless you have a stream or a pond. They are extremely messy to clean up after - and I was the one that had to clean the kiddie pond when I was growing up - I will never have ducks!

So sorry for you. Such a traumatic experience.

Our chickens are pets and it would be hard to lose any of them in such a brutal way. The pics of your chickens are very lovely; such pretty birds! I'm sure you will miss those lost, but glad to hear that some survived and others were safe.

I have a dog with a very high prey drive and training her hasn't been successful, so we fenced off an area that is for chickens only. She respects the boundary of the fence, so it has worked well for us.

Nightmares indeed. You've experienced something many of us have dreaded, day and/night. Your birds are lovely. While nothing can replace the ones you lost, keep it together. You and your birds will pull each other through the trauma.

She is about 12 years old. She's done this before and we've tried everything and nothing stops her.
