You have beautiful birds and take great pics of them. Over time I have noticed a lot of roos. What is your hen to roo ratio. Do you have trouble with them wearing out the hens. What kind of housing do you have for them? I ask all of that because after a year of chicken keeping I have wound up with way more roos than I need, but I kinda like a few of the guys. I just rehomed two EE and a Welsumer this week. That leaves me with 2 EE age 2yrs, 1 Cochin, 1 Polish, and 1 Welsumer. The EE are from my original flock. They are really nice guys, but did wear the feathers off a couple of the hens last year. 2/7 ratio. This year I have 12 hens/pullets. The Cochin was bought as a pullet from a pullet order. Guess I got the 10% roo. The Polish will be in a breeding pen come spring. The Welsumer broke its toe in September and still hops around. He keeps reinjuring it. Right now I have him in a cage to try to keep him from doing it again. He has turned into a big pet and I don't want to cull him. The only way he can catch a hen is if she wants to be caught. With all that it will leave me with 3.5 roos to 12 hens in the large flock. I have a add on the local internet trader to sell the Cochin He is a blue barred and very pretty. I'm only asking $10 to keep him out of the frying pan. I would really like to keep him but..... I'm failing terribly at chicken math.

Newbie question here! I have my first dozen chicks in the brooder now, about 10 days old. I'm in love. My hubby and his mom picked them out when I was at work. They said 4 they picked out were Americaunas, but did not pay attention/remember how it was spelled at the feed store. I would assume they are really EE. All 4 look like chipmunks of various shades. My question is: Will they all look alike/similar as hens, or will they all be different?

Right now I have 2 keeper roos, that is what I like to keep it at, I grow my roo's out to eat, but I caponize them (neuter). Right now my flock is small and rebuilding (post apocalypse) I had 3 roos (two first season and a laid back head roo) this past year and20ish hens they made more then 1/2 the girls bare backed. I don't think it would have been as big a problem except my head roo didn't mind other guys taking advantage?????

Not likely even chicks that look identical can and often do grow up completely different looking as adults.

Do you caponize them yourself? at what age?
