The EE braggers thread!!!

My gal is named Gracie. We got her and our roo last spring and they both have excellent temperaments. We are brand new to chickens so I really am at a loss with the baby. It enjoys attention but is very clear what it does and doesn't like. It'll peep loudly till u pick it up but it doesn't want to be touched or pet. I was holding it yesterday and turned my attention to my daughter for a moment only to look back and find my wrist bloody and the chick happily pecking away! I have some neuropathy so didn't feel it. It appears to enjoy spending time w/the older chicks but always goes for their eyes...and toes. I think I understand the pecking order thing but will this chick ever relent? Any advice would be appreciated and thank you for your post

The above message was meant for Bruceha2000. I'm sorry, I don't have much experience on this site and on how to post.

Oh my. I don't have experience with chicks pecking other chicks' feet and/or eyes. I'd be watching that one like a hawk. Might need to be separated until he/she goes to freezer camp if she keeps it up. Last thing you need is for one of the other birds to lose an eye. Chickens peck at anything that is "unusual" on a surface. Mine think freckles or small scabs might be food. You need to be vigilant about that and maybe there was something on your wrist that didn't match the "background".

1st egg from a pullet that will be 24 weeks old tomorrow. It weighed 2oz.

Nice sized 1st pullet egg, very nearly USDA Large!

Here is 6 month old Pocahontas, she must be a Cream Legbar / Blue Wheaten Americana cross but I don't know which was roo, no eggs yet. Her coat is more like a parka and with no comb she overheats and pants easily. I hope it doesn't become a problem this summer.

Beautiful bird. You don't have her in a heated coop, right?

Yes it is. @ the egg size. She is currently laying about ever other day. So far she's the only one from that group of seven laying. I almost have the one laying picked, there are two almost identical, but enough difference in them if I can catch her on the nest again I'll know for sure.

Quote: I have a couple dozen that I hatched last August up at my cousin's barn.
I had a sweet Dominique roo that never went to the farm until last week.
He just got too loud & horny to be a house chicken anymore. I traded him for this one who is bottom of pecking order sweet. She is out in the back yard all day with 5 other hens. I see her eating left over snow a lot. I bring her in at night with the only other that isn't aggressive to keep her company. Because the others would beat her up.
She just seems to have twice the feathers of any other chicken. And when I bring her in the 72* house, sit her in my lap and pet her it doesn't take long before she is panting. Even roosting she has her mouth open.

Every flock is different, as are everyone's goals, but it might be best to leave her out with the girls. sometimes the best intentions can cause more problems. you can step in if necessary, but special treatment usually only makes it worse. It also sounds like the warm house is making her uncomfortable.

Wow! I've never entertained the idea of an inside chicken. I have a few in my flock that are very sweet with very little effort on my part. They have names and get special treatment. I call them and they come out every morning. I pet them and feed them a little corn in my lap. It is nice to have a few that are so sweet. The rest are pretty wild at heart.

I don't think my husband would let me have one inside! Your gold one is really pretty.

Were getting off the subject, let me start over. I got a couple dozen hatching eggs from Blue House Farms.
They were suppose to be purebred Cream Legbar, Blue Wheaten Ameraucana, Swedish Flower Hens.
This chicken is none of those so they have poor control of there roosters. They also show a Double Laced Blue Barnevelder rooster on there website. This hen is either half Wheaten Ameraucana / Cream Legbar or Blue Barnevelder.
Any knowledgeable EE'ers have an idea what she is? She is 6 months (just started to squat) 3 1/2 lb and a half pound must be feathers. She has enough feathers on her to stuff a pillow. Is this normal for EEs? Will she shed some as it gets warmer?

she definitely has wheaten ameraucauna in her. I wouldn't know what else she is bred with but if i had to guess a barnevelder because of all the feathers. did she hatch from a blue egg? she looks like there might be something wrong with her. her tail is angled low like she feels sick. check her feathers to see if it's mostly the fluffy feather types.
