This is my new baby girl, an EE from Murray. I know they are mixes and so their colors don't really have names, but does anyone have any idea what color she is or will be when she's and adult. She's 4-weeks old.

These are our day Olds that hatched out yesterday . I have a really dumb question but I'm going to ask it anyway . Is the beard n muff thing a sex linked trait? I know nothing about chicken genetics but was curious. We have an EE pair that was sold to us as Ameraucana 2 years ago. Dad doesn't have muffs/beard and mom does. We have 2 babies that are bearded and 2 that are not. Can it go either way? Thanks in advance.

Not sex linked . Since you got both bearded and non bearded your hen has only 1 copy of the bearded gene .

Okay, thanks. Last year one of her eggs hatched and it was fully bearded like the two shown above. I suspect DH may have picked up one of the eggs from our BO/EE mix that lays the same shade of green although it's possible she only has 1 copy. So, the male has no affect on determining beard n muffs at all? Sorry, this stuff is confusing to me and I'm trying to learn as I go.

Yes the male contributes if he has the gene . Which I believe you said he did not have a beard .

She'll be some sort of partridge type color. Hatchery Easter Eggers aren't really mixed breeds, they are more of a 'landrace' type rather than a breed. And she looks sick. That hunched up, fluffed up look is not normal.

Really? I was worried about her since she hasn't been running around like the others. What can I do? What do you think it is?

We called the hatchery and they said to feed her some honey in an attempt to perk her up. I'll try some yogurt and eggs as well if it doesn't help her. Thanks for telling me, I know chicks are disposable to some people but ours are pets. Thanks!

What are you feeding? Medicated or unmedicated chick feed? Has she been exposed to soil yet?

Honey can have bacteria in it young critters cannot handle...Well, that's what I have been told.
