Hi Katychickenlady--

I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania and there is a lot of snow on that stone wall at the moment.

ahhh . . . now I am so happy to be in Idaho! I don't have a beautiful stone wall, but I am taking my three week old chicks out for their first run in the grass and sunshine today!

All of you all chcks are Beautiful. However, I have a question. What is the difference between EE's and Ameraucaunas. I have some Ameraucaunas that lay a beautiful light blue egg, but I also have some that are mixed with the marans and their off spring lay a lovely olive colored egg. Ppl. have told me I can't call them Ameraucaunas. Is that true? Aren't Ameraucanas mixed anyway? I love them all, I just don't know what to call them to be correct.

Katy - I set the eggs I got from you this morning. As you know, when I got them they had been roughed up in shipping. I candled that day and couldn't see any air sacs. I got some eggs from some friends here in town to include while the shipped ones just rested. I was thinking I'd be lucky if I had any that were viable. HOWEVER, I candled them as I put em in the bator and saw air sacs on them all. YAY!!! It's a chance, but more of a chance than I was thinking I had. So ... I'm pretty happy right now. The temps are stable and everything is looking good.

Hi there. There are eight color varieties recognized by the Ameraucana Breeders Club: Black, Blue, BLue Wheaten, Brown Red, Buff, Silver, Wheaten, White. Only birds who meet these color restrictions and breed true are considered Ameraucanas. All other colors are considered Easter Eggers, even if they are the result of breeding two separate color varieties of pure bred Ameraucanas resulting in a random colored EEer. The reasoning behind this that these eight colors can be bred true - a valuable trait if you want to sell or trade chicks and know what you are getting. Also, pure bred Ameraucanas only lay blue eggs or a shade of blue/green egg. It has always seemed to me that there should be some distinction in name between chickens that are simply off color pure bred Ameraucana chickens (who carry both copies of the blue egg color gene and breed true in this trait) from the EEers that are a cross between Ameraucana and some other breed and thus only carry one copy of the blue egg shell gene. It gets complicated sometimes when we are talking EEers and have to go to great lengths to explain which kind we have and what genetic potential there is, when a separate term would simplify things greatly.
