The EE braggers thread!!!

It doesn't take long for a chicken owner to figure out that chickens are really drawn to the color red. My very first order of chicks had me rushing to the hardware store for a red light bulb when one poor little chick got pecked on hard enough to bleed and all the others went at that spot with a vengeance! Scared me! I had to isolate the poor little thing while I went online to figure out what to do. I would also avoid green since they are also drawn to that color.
I use purple, blue, yellow, and have even used pink without problems but it did make me nervous.

Use food coloring (since it's non-toxic) inside the vent. A little will last several days.

All four of my mutt pullets have now started laying. Two look like odd colored EEs but are a cross between a EE rooster and a golden comet. One of those is laying a blue egg. So I guess you could say, my mutt is an EE.

How friendly are your EE babies? Mine have suddenly gone all goofy on me.

It started with one of the RIRs... when I put my hand in the brooder with feed on it to encourage them to be near my hand, she jumped on my arm and flapped up to my shoulder so she could flip my hair around. Then she would lay on my arm (since it is really close to the heat lamp) and sprawl and preen, and she even let me pet her!

Then some of the EEs came up when she was trying to climb up my arm... so I had them "step up" (like a parrot, lol!) and the one I held went like rag-doll flop within 6'' of the heat lamp. Her wings drooped and she "splatted" on my hand and drooped her head down blinking sleepily, she wanted to lay like this while I stroked her back and under her wings for about 15 seconds then she sat up panting and wanted down.

It's hilarious... I go and stick my hand in the box, and I get about 3-4 chicks queing up to be given a "ride" to be 6'' away from the heatlamp for all of 15 seconds (it's too hot otherwise). For some reason they get near that heat and they practically turn over on their backs. They're almost 2 weeks old, and I have the brooder temp at around 85F. That's okay right? I was almost afraid they were too cold the way they were seeming to go nuts basking in the lamp... Now it seems they associate me with doing that though, and instead of running away from me they come and lean against my hand and try and get "rides" up... Crazy!! I've had chicks a bunch of times but never seen anything like this!
