I'm interested in the sex of chicks based on feather color. I know it's largely difficult to tell, especially since mine are so young, but I guess you could say I'm obsessing over it simply because I've already got one BR pullet who is definitely a roo, and I don't know I can have another! My chicks are all around 3.5 to 4 weeks at this point.

I posted pictures the other day, but I think these are a little better of my "girls".

A pretty good view of Lady's back and face. She's so much bigger than the others!

A front view of lady, with Wendy laying down in front. They're both larger than the BR/RIR/?? chicks, but they were from the beginning, so they're probably 4 weeks old.

And lastly, here's Wendy by herself with Henri the BR roo.

But yeah, if there's any kind of comprehensive way to tell as the chicks feather in what their sex would be, that's the kind of information I'm looking for. I know the other signs to look for- reddness in waddles and combs, larger 3 rowed pea combs, pointy saddle feathers, tree trunks for legs, crowing... but they're too young for all of that!

Thanks, Ilia... and everyone else! I'm a total n00b.

sharol - The first one is going to be a blue based duckwing - She or he will be like a duckwing but with blue instead of black. Possibly some Columbian in there, which in males means it will look a little like this -

In females, it will be mostly brown or white with blue.

The second chick is fascinating, honestly I've little to say on what she'll look like, but I'm guessing a very wildtype duckwing appearance but with a lot of black. I've got a couple Araucanas who started out mostly black, and matured a very dark duckwing. I honestly have no clue why they are so blackened, but I'm about to find out in a few months.

Third chick is a straight-up gold duckwing. Will be a beautiful bird!

Last chick is another duckwing, but likely with either Columbian or something else mixed in there. It will grow up to be a very typy EE look. (brown and black patterned hen MAYBE a rooster but I'm voting hen)

Velvet Hairpiece - Wendy SO FAR looks like a girl. She will feather out the typy EE color of an almost partridgey brown-black duckwing patterning. Lady is a gorgeous Silver Duckwing, but, if s/he gets any color besides black and white coming in - It is a boy. Except if it is a salmony color on the chest or spread throughout most of the body, it is a girl.

ETA - forgot photos

Well,I started to jump in and say I have a blk EE chick but then I remembered that it will likely be an Olive Egger that will likely get some copper later as the father is a blue copper Marans.

I do have another younger chick though that is an EE and I think it is black but I really need to look very close as I may be wrong. I need to check when I get home.
