The EE braggers thread!!!

Wishing4Wings: Yup, I moved the hen onto the floor of the coop. We made the corner into a boxed-in area so it feels like a nest box, but on the floor. She didn't get upset at all. I moved the eggs down with her and put them back underneath her. The baby won't drink any water yet, but it got two small pecks of chick feed into the beak. It watched its momma drink from the chick waterer and I even dipped the beak into the water, but no luck. I will leave the water and food inside their area tomorrow. I'm not sure how long the hen will sit on the remaining eggs before giving up, unless they hatch soon.

Summer98- What a nice hen you have! The little EE will probably be fine. Mama will show it what to do. Keep us updated!

The chick that hatched last night. Light Brahma rooster X EE hen (blue egg).
I can't believe the feet are not feathered! Also, they are yellow. The color pattern looks like an EE with that chipmunk type stripe down the back.

Don't give up on the feathering on the legs! I have 8 Japanese bantams and I got them at 7wks old(took them home @ the end of June beginning of July) none of them had anything on their legs (person I got them from also had bantam cochins as well) a few weeks ago I had to do a double take on a few of them. A few have a little feathering on their legs!! Somewhere down the line there was some mixing. Maybe you will have some late bloomers as well

I asked a while back about increasing the size of my EE and getting bluer eggs. I didn't see any surprises in the advice. We had used a blue wheaten and a wheaten ameracuana rooster over our hatchery EEs. That increased the size and brought in the blue we like. We culled 21 roosters this weekend and since the wheaten was a lot larger than the blue wheaten, we kept him to use again. We will put the wheaten back over the EE and see if we get another increase in size or a change in egg color. We also kept a few lavender ameracuana hens because the eggs are incredibly blue. We try to add that to the mix but will have to work to get the size up. Then I suppose we will choose a large EE rooster and try him over the EE to see what results. Ultimately I think we may get a Appenzeller Barthuhner rooster, who is a white egg layer. They have a big beautiful beard and a pea comb ... but lay the white egg. If they are as large as they look I think that's the way w will go, once the price falls A LOT. Anyway that sounds like a number of years to stay busy with these birds.

We have put the Marans over the EE to develop olive eggers. That did increase size considerably but not sure how to get back to BLUE eggs through that method. We have a OE rooster growing out that looks like he will be huge! He is young and already rivals the size of the mature Marans rooster.
