The EE braggers thread!!!

I crossed my Light Brahma rooster to some EE hen eggs (several blue eggs and one olive green egg). One blue egg hatched last night!!

I was really expecting it to have feathered feet like the Brahma. It also has yellow legs and I thought EE only have slate legs? I'm not sure what's going on, but genetics are surprising. A black Australorp is the broody momma. I'm trying to figure out where to move them because they are in a tall nest box and I don't want them to fall out. Also, I need room to set out a chick waterer and feeder. Do you think I should move them to the floor or in a different building?

Pictures to come shortly...

I have only had 2 go broody ever and it happened this Spring so my experience is very limited. If they go broody again I will move them before they hatch & put them in an isolated spot where the chicks can stay safe with mom. My chicks were in the chicken coop & a couple fell out & ended up running through the fence. I could not believe how fast they move & how far away from mom they can get

I did catch them so none were lost. I put small scale webbing around the perimeter of the run & blocked the door to the chicken coop for a few days before letting them out. It was a great deal of extra work so from now on I will relocate mom before any hatch if I get lucky enough to have another broody hen.

I can't believe the feet are not feathered! Also, they are yellow. The color pattern looks like an EE with that chipmunk type stripe down the back.

Cute cute cute! I am eagerly awaiting next Spring so I can do this same cross! EEs don't have to have slate legs, as long as they carry the blue egg gene, they can look like anything and still be EE. All my girls do have darker legs, but my rooster has yellow legs with a slate stripe down the front and back. I'll get a picture sometime. Haven't posted one of him since he got out of his ugly stage

How many eggs of this cross was your broody sitting on? I bet some have feathered legs and some don't.

How adorable. Getting chick fever!

This is Trixie. Her dad is a Bantam Mottled Cochin and mama was an EE. She hatched on 5/4/12

Quinn, same mom and dad but looked like dad and Trixie had the chipmunk stripe

She has yellow legs and a straight comb but lays a greenish/blue egg. She hatched out of a blue egg.

MamaHenChris: Thanks for sharing. I guess the yellow legs is ok after seeing yours. I wish mine had the feathered feet like your cochin cross. Glad to hear yours lays a colored egg, hopefully mine will (if it's a female).

She's sitting on 4 other EE eggs yet, but when I tried to candle them last night with a flashlight, they didn't look very far along. Just a dark blob. The olive green egg looked porous, like light shining through a bunch of small holes without the blob. I don't think my flashlight is bright enough. But I heard that if they are infertile, they blow up. Is that true? If so, they should have by now.

Well, I haven't done an update on my girls in a month or two so I figured it was time

. My girls are all 27.5 weeks old but only Jewel is laying. I just took these this morning.

Jewel. I love her feathering, gold and blue

although I got this one in the shade so her gold isn't very shiny in this picture. She's not a cuddlebug, but she will come right up to you for treats as long as you don't try to pick her up. Her egg is very green.

Heidi. She has a very interesting feather pattern. Red and blue mottled, I think is what you'd call it. The blue might be light enough to be called lavender, I don't know. She also has some pointy saddle feathers but I know she's a girl.

Side view

Jolly Roger. She has always been one of the friendliest.

Mean Bird. She's another I just know is a pullet but look at the saddle feathers and darker red patches on her shoulders! Has anyone else ever seen anything like this? What exactly is going on here?

Chichi. She is definitely my favorite chicken!! Always friendly, she loves to fly up on my shoulder whenever I go out to do the chores

Pretty, too.

Here she is with her pal Ol' Rooster. They are never far apart. No she is not a bantam! Rooster's just enormous

And lastly, meet my EE roo, Mallard. You may have seen him in earlier posts. Here he is out of his ugly stage! He is all about the ladies right now, but he isn't too rough with them at least. I snapped this while he was courting a Welsummer girl.

And for Summer98, here is a pic of his legs with the slate stripe. He hatched from a green egg and he has a pea comb so that's a good indicator he still carries the blue egg gene, which still classifies him as EE.

Well that's all folks! I'll post again when more of my girlies are laying! This is so fun!

Such a pretty little chick and a wonderful mama. (My BA went broody for a couple of weeks this summer, but my coop is full....

The chick having a pea comb is a better indication of carrying the blue egg gene. The two genes are very near each other on the chromosome and are usually inherited together. Legs can be any color and don't relate to egg color. They can also change and darken from the chick's original color. One of my EE chicks with yellow legs ended up with green legs (willow?).

I have heard of infertile eggs exploding in incubators and under hens. Supposed to be pretty disgusting.

Don't know how to tell when or if it will happen.

Have you moved the nest onto the ground yet? The chick will need to eat and drink fairly soon. Moving the nest may cause the hen to stop sitting on the other eggs, though.
