Our girls aren't laying yet, but I sometimes wonder if people become like the woman in this old movie, so tired of messing with chickens and eggs and general (although exaggerated) farm life that she never wants to see another egg again.

I can't really say because I still don't have chickens!

I do love that movie, though. I think my favorite part is when Claudette Colbert is dancing with the Indians.

I never saw the movie, but I did read the book when I was a teen. Believe it or not, remembering that book was what *encouraged* me to look into chickens when I got older. LOL

My mom gave me a first edition copy of that book for Christmas. I need to pull it out & read it. It's based on Vashon Island, which is just a hop, skip, & a jump away from me.

I love that book! It is so much funnier than movie. I was just telling my sister that I should read it again since we got our chicks this week.

Actually Jen, the location of the Egg & I farm is near Port Townsend, WA. If I remember it is actually in Chimacum. They sold it a few years ago and the antique shops in Port Townsend sold off some of the old farm equipment and stuff.

Edited to add: The road it is on is called the "Egg & I" road.

What astounds me is that they bought that farm for only $450. It's hard to buy a *coop* for $450 these days.

I just finished that book and really enjoyed it. Remember - they had so many chickens, it was a pretty industrial operation!
"Eggs in the Coffee, Sheep in the Corn" by Marjorie Myers Douglas is also a fun book to read about farm life.
I'm not tired of it yet, but I only have 8 chickens:)
