The EMERGENCY Thread!!!

So after some research I'm worried about subcutaneous emphysema... nothing is overly swollen but there is a spot on the vest that crackles when pressed, a small spot, nothing real obvious when looking.. the chick makes a clicking noise when breathing and stops often to rest and breath... then goes back to try to eat and drink.. act normal other than the resting and breathing... not as active as the others though. Should this heal on its own possibly?? It's the spot I'm touching, it deflated if you touch it

Looks like your pressing the crop to me. See that she is drinking plenty of water - add some poultry vitamins or electrolytes. Since she is so small, she may do better with wet chick starter - this is sometimes easier to eat. Just keep watch on the beak, she will most likely hone that down later.

Good evening wanted to update you on the what happened with the chick that was hatching last night so far it has seemed very heathy and has been snuggled with it's mom all day. Thanks for the help.

Thanks, that's what I thought with the crop but the crackling worried me. She is a bantam Cochin so she is small but yes she is smaller than some of my others. Will try the electrolytes now!

Welcome To BYC

What type of food/treats do you feed?
Do the chicks have a source of grit (crushed granite)?
Is she pooping?

She may have a slow or impacted crop, so provide her with some grit and give wet feed only. Gently massage the crop in a downward motion being careful not to press liquids/food back up into the airways.

Here's more information on crop issues:

Ok I need advice. My 3ish week old chick is still sneezing, it's been over a week and the sneezing is all the time now, I noticed bubbles in her right eye yesterday morning. Someone suggested I try the vetrx rub and I did, I haven't seen bubbles today but the sneezing is constant and she even wheezes when she takes a nap. She is eating, I just watched her eat her crumbles and her crop stays full. She is in isolation with newspaper for bedding so no dust and none of my others show signs of anything. I've researched all the glory of respiratoy issues and I'm wanting to save her. Should I wait this out and see if she gets worse before trying any tylan??? Oh and her poop is solid and white capped, not runny

Help my girl

She is a 10 week old hen. Not sure what breed, she has feathers on her feet and very sweet. She came out of the coop this morning normal, few hours later she was standing with her nose to the ground, I thought she broke her neck. She progressed to laying down with head turned, eyes open and clear, she is not eating but will drink with eye dropper. No mites found, no injuries found. Help!!! What can I give her? I moved her indoor in a crate so I can take care of her.

she looks like black copper marans.

did you worm her? marans are a bit prone to worms. worm her first then put little honey in her water and if she gets better with that mix some boiled yolk with chicken starter/grower.

with the bubbles in the eye I wouldn't wait to treat her.
