The EMERGENCY Thread!!!

Ok I need advice. My 3ish week old chick is still sneezing, it's been over a week and the sneezing is all the time now, I noticed bubbles in her right eye yesterday morning. Someone suggested I try the vetrx rub and I did, I haven't seen bubbles today but the sneezing is constant and she even wheezes when she takes a nap. She is eating, I just watched her eat her crumbles and her crop stays full. She is in isolation with newspaper for bedding so no dust and none of my others show signs of anything. I've researched all the glory of respiratoy issues and I'm wanting to save her. Should I wait this out and see if she gets worse before trying any tylan??? Oh and her poop is solid and white capped, not runny
Can you post a video of her?
Are her nares (nostrils) clear of feed or any blockages?

It's possibly she may have a respiratory illness like Infectious Bronchitis, Mycoplasma or something like Brooder Pneumonia where she may have inhaled mold/dust etc. There is no way to know for sure what the cause is without testing.

Antibiotics will only treat secondary infections from respiratory illness, if she continues to have bubbles/foam in the eyes, nasal discharge and her symptoms worsen then it would be worth a try to see if the Tylan50 will help.

Help my girl
She is a 10 week old hen. Not sure what breed, she has feathers on her feet and very sweet. She came out of the coop this morning normal, few hours later she was standing with her nose to the ground, I thought she broke her neck. She progressed to laying down with head turned, eyes open and clear, she is not eating but will drink with eye dropper. No mites found, no injuries found. Help!!! What can I give her? I moved her indoor in a crate so I can take care of her.
Can you take her to a vet?
Is her neck really limber?
What does her poop look like?
Any chance she ingested something toxic or rotten (fertilizer, weed killer, dead animal/rotten vegetation with maggots, etc.).

Try to keep her warm and hydrated. If you have some poultry vitamins add those to her water. You may want to make sure that her nares (nostrils) stay out of the shavings so she can breath well. Since we don't know what's wrong...you can try rolling a small towel up and propping her head up a little to see if that's more comfortable for her.

Do what you can - vet care would be best.

No area vet,
She can not hold her head up. Her neck is limber
No poop in hours
I thought about a toxin, just not sure if there is any in there area
I've been keeping her hydrated
I did as you suggested and increased her head and gave vitamins in water.

Someone suggested de-worming her. Can I be over medicating her?

How is she doing?
You ask could you be over medicating her - what, if any, medications have you given her?

It's possible she may have a neck injury, could she have fallen? With her neck being limber/she can't move it, there can be many possibilities - "limber neck" (botulism or ingesting something rotten or toxic) is one, but it could be due to illness, vitamin/nutritional deficiency or injury as well.

You may want to have a look around the area(s) that she frequented to see if there is anything suspicious - look at your feed and around your water station to make sure there's no mold, fungus, etc.

UPDATE, she survived the night and today, I was able to give her water, yogurt and honey with an eye dropper, I started administering Vitamin C, E, selenium, amoxicillin naproxen sodium this morning and this evening she actually opened her eyes, they seemed clearer and she seams to have more neck strength. Will see how tonight goes. Hopefully she will make it. I'll keep you posted. Any advise is appreciated.

Thank you. My husband and I have checked all areas in the run. Nothing spotted other than the water container being a bit rusty.

I did notice the night before a few of the girls were kicked off the roost because of shoving. It is up 3 feet. I wonder if she hit her head on the metal feeder and me handling her made it worse.

This morning she is not even responding to me at all, eyes are closed, won't swallow the water mixture. I'm dealing with the reality that she is not going to make it. She did go potty and it's yellow/white/black looser than normal. All my other girls seem to be fine.

Should I lower the roost until they are adults?

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'm de-worming everyone today, just in case.

Poke the corner of her eye and see if the inner eyelid closes or moves. If it does move, it's probably not botulism.

Hydration - keeping them properly hydrated when then can't hold their heads up is tricky, but do your best and shoot for no less than 25 ml per pound per day.

Yes, her inner eyelids close and open. The room temp might be cooler than 80. I've bundled her up to hold her tight and in 1 place. Hopefully this doesn't hurt her.

Keep her warm, but don't bundle her tightly, she needs to be able to move around if she chooses. You can place a heating pad covered with a thick towel under her, but you will need to monitor it closely.

Do the best you can to keep fluids in her.

Hello, I woke to check on my chickens and I have a chicken that looks like it has literally been scalped. The skin still hanging. I'm not sure what to do. She seemed a little weird when she would go on the roost, almost out of it. I've called the vet and waiting, but she didn't respond to my last text a few days ago. I have isolated her within the coop and put some vetricin on it. I'm big on all natural so I also put some coconut oil and lavender/melaleuca to help with any infection. Any ideas on what else I can do until vet calls? And do I need to completely isolate her from the rest of the chickens? Help!!
